What is this?

Today I took out the dash clocks with the intention of replacing the clock with the new oil pressure gauge that I have. I have seen this done on this site:

However, with the clocks out on the left hand side I notices something that I have not seen before. It can be seen in the picture below on the right hand side secured with bolts. can someone tell me what it is?

Do you mean that box attached to the steering column support?
If it is then on my car that was were the control box for the intermittent wiper was fitted. I cant see enough of it to say if its the same.

Might be some kind of alarm or immobiliser box? What is it connected to?

I'm fantasizing it's a secret tracking device so the RAF drones can obliterate the car when it's illegally driven down 100 feet the block without a valid MOT or liability insurance policy.

I was able to get my new inspection camera down behind it the other day and it sure enough was a Lucas unit. It says it is the wiper unit. Just a bit strange as I would not of expected it to be there.[8D]
