Ahhh, Quiet - Finally!

After doing my clutch/gearbox refit I was going crazy with all of the noises in the car; first the louder transmission noise from a hard gearbox mount, then an exhaust leak, exhaust rattles, heat shields buzzing, the engine restraint cable too loose and slapping something on acceleration, screws rattling loose in the dash. After a few weeks of tightening and crawling around most of the nasty noises are gone! I finally gave up on the heat shield for the catalytic converter and pulled it off until I can get some cracks tack welded.

Now that all those sounds are gone I can still hear the rods in both door latch systems jiggling around. But I might be able to just ignore those.[:)]

Well done, I know exactly what you are talking about.

I once had an amazing 45 minutes on a 75 kilometer gravel back road run, sliding around corners at ridiculous speeds, doing things I hadn't done for years.

I then spent most of 3 weekends getting rid of all the new rattles squeaks & squawks in the dash. I can't stand those noises.

Of course it helps to have a good sound system, that & be going a little deaf. My son can now hear annoying noises in my cars that I can't. That's his bad luck.

Once upon a time I slipped a length of 1/4" rubber hose over the door latch rod to quiet the rattling noise. These days I sympathize with my TR7 on cold mornings when all the creaks and rattles manifest themselves, both in my chassis and the car. But, once everything warms up, the noise quiets down.

Ah yes, noises. Most of mine come from rattling dash sounds on bumpy roads, that hard plastic dash parts in contact with each other. I wonder is those leather covers would help? They had black leather with red threading that would fit well with the Spider theme. But it might/would take me out the collector plate/insurance group of our provincial insurance as they insist on originality except for a few "safety" areas.

The only other annoying sound is the plastic of the drivers side sunvisor as the plastic slapping the frame in up position but not the down. The foam is dust and I haven't done the Mildred sponge upgrade yet.

There's the differential whine that STP helped a bit, more noticeable with top up than down. I finally put the top down yesterday as we are in for a ten day stretch of high sixty/low seventy pure sunny weather, unusual for this early as we usually get the odd rain shower here or there, even on sunny/partly cloudy days. It's come a month early. Aaaaah global warming.[:p]

A&W 21st annual car show in Duncan tomorrow, more on that later I expect.

I quieted those down quite a bit by sticking pieces of self adhesive sound dampening material (Fat Mat, Dynamat) to the back side of the various pieces. It doesn't completely quite them, but the remaining noise is now a lot lower.

Yes there are lots of irritating little noises but it seems to me that if you guys have time to listen to those noises you are not driving fast enough.

My first attempt to quieten the dash I used foam rubber single side self adhesive strips between all parts. Great silence, for a week. The rubber squashed flat that quickly.

Next I used some 1/2" wide 1/8" thick, & some 3/4" wide 1/4 thick foam neoprene rubber self adhesive strips. that was in 2004, & they are still working.

Sorry fellers, I've got bad news for you kids.

Even thou I have some trouble hearing some things on TV, & some conversation, I can still hear most squeaks & rattles that develop in my TRs, & thank god for that.

It would be dreadful not to hear that lovely purr when cruising down a smooth road at 65 MPH, or that bark from the exhaust, as you go back a couple of cogs, coming into a corner, & the growl when you floor it coming out.

Nope, at 74 there is still enough left for rattles to be annoying, & for those glorious sounds to make my day.

That's it exactly. There are too many good sounds to listen too when driving my car to have all that irritating clatter taking up ear space!

And I spoke too early anyway. Something new is rattling under the bonnet already!
