Radio Console Help Please

I have currently got an old Philips 840 pull-out radio fitted but want to fit a NOS Triumph/Motorola radio.

The old radio pulls out of its housing unit with a good tug but the edges of the console itself have been nibbled by a few millimetres to accommodate this unit. The metal fascia plate of the new radio is just a little bit smaller than the remaining hole, so I think I am going to have to fit a whole new radio console.

As a fairly incompetent DIY-er, will I find this difficult to do? Once the console is out, are the wires and heater controls push fit to reinstall? Will I need a special fixing kit for the new radio?

Finally, does anyone have a grey console in excellent condition to sell (and a fixing kit if needed)? I will be at Tatton Park on the weekend if someone can help please.

One thing you might want to try, and it's inexpensive, is go to your local Best Buy or car audio shop and see if they have a generic radio install kit. You can find them online as well. These are meant to fit a wide range of radios into a wide range of holes, so you may be able to come up with a solution there.

Radios were typically fit by dealers with only the face plate being stock, some with the Triumph logo on them. The exception was the Spider and 30th Anniversary models which had the radios factory installed (a Panasonic AM/FM stereo/cassette unit). There is no "fixing kit" other than spacers as the radio just rested loose at the back wedged between the heater and the transmission hump.

The heater control knobs pull off but originals are quite brittle due to age and may break. New ones are available but do not have the raised portion of the imprints but one doesn't notice that small difference. Even these radios were long enough that they had to sit at an angle as room in the consul is at a premium. Here are some pictures of the Spider installation.

It is possible to build up the nibbled edges of the console whth resin. The radio is typically clamped in place by 2 plates, one behind the console and one in front. The radio is clamped to these plates by nuts on the two shafts. supercass
