Bad week.

Postby Spectatohead » 22 May 2014 04:54

The car was running great. I was driving it every chance I could get. It did have a little coolant leak around the thermostat housing. It would go a week or more before I had to add any but it made my "to do" list. Then, I pulled into a parking spot at the veterinarian's and ran over the curb. Scratched up and bent the air dam back pretty good. Oh well still drivable. So then I decided it was time to take care of my leak. I pulled the thermostat housing and replaced the gasket. Still leaking just a bit. Maybe a little tighter will do it? Stripped the bottom hole out. Crap! Oh look I have a helicoil kit that has been in the bottom of my tool kit for 25-30 years, in the right size yet. What luck. Can't get at it with the drill though. Maybe a right angle drill will get it. If not I'll have to pull the carb and intake manifold. Fun.

My thermostat has the foot for the bypass but does not have the tickler thing. Should I be replacing it too? Also, does the hose from the bypass on the housing go straight to the water pump? It is an Offenhauser 360 manifold.

It's supposed to be in the low 80s tomorrow. I was going to take it to work because of the nice day and because the Nissan is in the shop getting EVAP errors fixed ;so that it can pass emissions and get it's license tabs renewed. Now I'm going to have to take the Subaru dangit.

By tickler do you mean the air bleed?

If I need one in a stat I just drill a3 mm hole, in theory warm up will take a little longer but I have not noticed any real change.
