Hi folks,

In my country our equivalent of the MOT, but which is much tougher, goes from every two years to annual once the car reaches 10 years old. This is a real nuisance.

However, cars built before 1 Jan 1980 are totally exempt from testing.

So naturally, my mind turned to the TR7.

At the moment I have a 2005 Rover 45 with a K-Series engine.

I would like to use this as a donor to build a fuel efficient TR7 convertible of 1979 vintage, or possible a hardtop. Obviously need a different gearbox or an adapter.

Can anyone advise on whether this has been done already? Any thoughts on the conversion?

what engine do you have, is it the 1.4 or the 1.8? Is it the variable valve vvc engine?
Even the 1.4 had 105bhp which is comparable to the standard TR7 lump. Personally I would struggle with the concept of putting a 1.4 in a 7 but then that is only my opinion. The 1.8 vvc would have 160bhp so that might be much more appropriate and give it a lot of performance, who knows, in a nother world where TR7s were developed into the 90s, they may well have ended up with that engine anyway. The Caterham ran the 1.4 I believe and hence would have had a gearbox designed for rear wheel drive so they are available and with a bit of hunting I am fairly sure that there are lots of rear wheel drives that ran these engines in the kit car fraternity.

I have an old S&S Preparations catalogue and on the back cover there is a picture of a yellow DHC with a K series engine installed. So it can be done, give them a try as I have always found them very helpful.

The K series can be adapted for rear wheel drive use, as its already been said, the caterham used the K series with a Ford type 9 gearbox I think. If you wanted to use it with the LT77 then you'd have to either fabricate or have made an adapter plate. Alot of kit cars use the K series as well.
I'm going to be fitting a Rover T series engine (200hp standard) to my TR7 later on this year and this can be done using either a sherpa van bellhousing or one from an early mpi landrover.

I think the M series was the two litre 16 valve engine as fitted to the rover 800. I remember being impressed by an early left hooker in France back in 89/90 as a passenger only.
The T series I am not sure about but I assume it could be the turbo version of this engine or the engine in the later tomcat/200 turbo.

The T series is the turbocharged version of the M series engine, I am getting my engine from a Rover 620Ti but you will find them in the Rover 220 and the 820. Plenty of space in the engine bay for the T or M series, exhaust is on the same side as the TR7 engine and you can get an inlet manifold from a landrover which puts the throttle body at the front of the bay.

M Series was also available as a turbo too, very rare but they were out there, they were hand built by Tickfords.

T Series, was a development of the M series and superseded it. Amongst a number of ' improvements ' were, it had largely internal breather system, water pump no longer driven by cam belt but by aux drive belt, cam belt auto adjuster, PAS not driven by inlet cam, plastic cam covers, MEMS engine management, better cylinder head, crank and pistons, rear main oil seal.

They never did sort out oil leaks from head gasket as the oil feed to head was same as O series in that its in the corner of the block, they all burnt oil down the valve guides, they both had sticky valves due to carbon build up on stems, we had to counter bore valve guides to over come this and the list goes on.

Talking of the K series of engines, here's a thought -

What about KV6 engine, first one's were rubbish. They had huge problems with liner sealing and lost count how many engines and complete cooling systems I changed when oil and water mixed then came set's of liners on those that hadn't already gone POP [xx(] But once BMW had reworked the basic design ( made the liners long enough [:0] ) it wasn't a bad lump. Pain in the ar5e changing rear inlet cam belts in the engine bay though.




Would go for the 2.5 litre and not the 2.0 litre.

As they used the Honda PG1 gearbox in the Rover 825, the same box as M and T series use then the bell housing bolt pattern is poss the same so should be poss to swap it to rear wheel drive using LT 77 box etc

KV6 2.5 litre, 175bhp as standard and great sound too. The MG ZS ran these if I remember correctly, as a tool for trackdays and sprinting it is very highly respected even among the media types such as Autocar. The did say that it was a bit underpowered[?][?][?]
