Hi,

New TV series on Channel 4 ( UK ) called ' For The Love Of Cars ' will feature Triumph Stag on Sunday but also feature Robsport for those of you who dealt with them but never met them, a chance to put a face to the name, not always a good idea [:p]

yeah saw the mk 1 escort they did, didn't look a bad show but sounds like the guy doing the rebuild not a stag fan from some of his comments in the trailer I saw......

project dhc sold sadly, but project fhc taking over... Dave...

When that show was first being planned by Love Films they got in touch with me. I quickly suspected it was going to be a hatchet job on the Stag so I did what I could to ensure that was averted wherever possible. Initially the Stag was going to be used as an illustration as a major cause of the death of the British motor industry of old so I sent them much information as evidence for that not being the case. They used 'Code Name: Stag' as their blueprint and I suspect also studied the video I made for the club in 2012 as they seem to have interviewed much the same people I did back then.

Fingers crossed they give the Stag a fair crack of the whip and not the usual tosh thrown at it, most of which is factually incorrect. Whatever, can't wait to see Ben at Robsport with Philip Glenister as those two should be a real laugh together.

Not a bad program tonight on the Stag. There was a bit of history, restoration and driving.

I missed the bit at Robsport as I had to answer the front door. Was it a blink and you'll miss it piece? I think I saw the back of Rob's head as they agreed the price for the restoration project.

Is it true that a quarter of all Stags are still on the road or SORN'd. That's impressive if it is.

Hi,

Not as bad as it could have been, got a bit fed up with the constant anything BL was cr4p attitude, we Brits are great at slagging ourselves off [:(] In a lot of ways BL was ahead of the game, lots of front wheel drive cars, hatch backs, five speed boxes, etc.etc.

Was hoping to see how they got that stuck on cylinder head off, completely the wrong explanation to why they stick ! You missed nothing Adam as it was only Ben from Robsport featured. Was hoping to see the new world HQ now its finished, guess will have to do it in the flesh instead.

Biggest single model car club too, guess they would be thinking about it. Can be strange lot though, not to offend any Stag owners [:I] At Gaydon S.T.A.R. event last year, everyone parked up together except the Stags who found there own field ???

The historic film was great though, could watch that stuff all night long [8D]

I noticed the light thing too, I think they were at Mira as that hilly backroad is the famous hump where Autocar magazine used to get really fast cars airborne.

My parents were watching, Stag owners as they are and my Mum kept saying, "you watch, he'll warm to it!" She was right, again[V].

Tried to wind my Dad up by suggesting a fuel injected 4.6 with lowered suspension and big minilites, he didn't bite. I should have suggested a turbo diesel[:D].

Anything's better than the version on Channel 5, where 2 blokes constantly scream at each other in reality TV mode - Classic Car Rescue, what a load of old cr4p.

There have been quite a few "car restoration" series appearing on Discovery Channel and the like. Some quite good, some a load of old tosh. This was probably at the better end of the scale.

Did any part of the program cover the well publicised casting sand in the galleries as part of the cooling issues and would anyone these days prefer a viscous coupling fan on their car to an electric fan?

They didn't mention the casting issues etc but did put the reasons for overheating down to poor production standards and poor maintenance by owners. Not understanding the need for anti-freeze/inhibitor all year etc. They decided the basic design was generally engineered OK.
Funny thing was they took it to an "expert" afterwards to test for overheating using fancy instruments on a rolling road. All was looking good, the infra-red picture of the radiator showed good flow etc but then there was a horrible noise from the engine - panic. Worried looks all round thinking the horror stories were true until Ben pointed out it was just the viscous coupling failed.
The presenter who started out saying he hated Stags and didn't really want to work on one was won over and loved it in the end. Must say the end result really did look very nice and I would certainly like another one myself.

We watched it today on 4OD too. The chap who started out saying he hated the Stag was probably a production ploy so they could emphasize how good the cars really are at the end. When he pulled up in the Jaguar E Type to have the exhaust notes compared using acoustic equipment I'm sure we all knew the Stag would win hands down. No other car sounds like it.

I did put the production company onto the casting sand issue but did impress on them the main reason for the overheating was the lack of corrosion inhibiting antifreeze. I also pointed out that back in the day the quality of coolant in general did not have the exceptional qualities of today.

I think they made a very good point of just how good the car is and that has got to be a good thing despite some of the deliberate British Leyland bashing. I would imagine some people will now be looking to buy their first Stag as a result of the programme.

Series 2, any chance they can do a TR7? Get on to them John and send them bullet reloaded. No other car epitomises the 70's style and labour relations of that era.

Theres going to be a new TV programme about the TR7 due later this year.
Filming starts soon and the presenter is a TR7 owner and long time enthusiast. The cars are being prepared.

I enjoyed the prog too, was surprised at it being named as the biggest owners club though, would of thought the morris minor owners club took that crown, or does it cover too many variations to be classed as a single marquee club.

all in all not a bad show, seen better but certainly seen worse... [:D]
