Air conditioner fan

I started to reinstall the air conditioning components into the FHC. However one of the two fans does not work. I have taken the cover off of the fan motor and found a bad brush. But I also found the entire winding black instead of copper. It must have gotten very hot in there as if the fan was forcibly stopped. Nevertheless continuity is OK.

But I can't get the fan blade off due to a frozen set screw. It needs to come off to replace the brush. Currently it's soaking in penetrating oil.

Has anyone used a replacement AC fan? What brand and where was it purchased? I would rather replace these two ancient motors with one new one.

I expect that the winding are toast. You will still have continuity but the windings will be not insulated from each other so they won't greate a magnetic field, or at least not one strong enough to function properly.

I found that most of the AC fans I have inspected needed oiling. If your's were not it is quite possible for them to have had enough resistance to turning to cause the winding to overheat and melt/burn the insulation off the winding wires.

It seems to me that others have found alternate fans it install from newer type cars. They will be on the list somewhere so you should be able to search for the topic.

The Porsche Boxster fan can be used as a replacement for the electric fan in an A/C TR8, but the TR8 fans are different to the TR7 fans so not sure if the Boxster fan fits the TR7 fan mounting frame.

One of the two fans is working nicely and putting out quite a bit of air. Is it possible that one fan would adequately do the job?

The other one turns freely by hand but runs very slowly and the connector gets warm pretty quickly. The brush spring in that fan doesn't seem to be strong enough hold the brush against the commutator. If I check continuity on it it is intermittent as I turn the shaft by hand.

The AC unit is pretty marginal especially with R134A refigerant. I would get both fans working.

I thought I could put original R12 in there. I had read that some shops have a supply and are legal to install it.

In the USA it is reclaimed freon is legal for reinstallation (no more is being made). When the conversion was made, the freon reclaimers thought they were going to make a fortune but the replacements turned out to just as cheap (or the reclaimed freon was just as expensive). As it leaks out into the atmosphere there will be a dwindling supply and will be harder to find.

In "clean" countries like Canada freon was outlawed. To import an A/C car into Canada you have to pay a $100 surcharge (or whatever you want to call it) x2 for motor homes because they usually have one for front and one for living quarters.

I would consider fitting a new single fan to replace the dual one but that would require fabricating a new bracket since the present bracket is not tall enough to take a fan blade large than the present ones.

Hasbeen, when you fitted your new AC unit how did you handle the fan for the evaporator?
