I found this steering wheel in a salvage yard last weekend. The wheel is in decent shape except for a small area with some dry rot. A small piece has broken off.

Has anybody found any tricks to repair this type of damage or is a recover required?

Contact Moto-Lita. They will recover in colour of your choice in leather.

That has not been the case with me and Moto-Lita/Lecarra in the US. When I contacted them, they told me when they moved they threw away the mold for doing 13 inch wheels. The woman I talked to said she thought she could used the 14 mold and then changed her mind and said "No mold.... can not recover the 13 inch wheel". If you had a different experience, please let us know the people you contacted. Thanks

Well, that might have been before they moved. I contacted them about a year ago or so. Nice people, just could not help me out with recovering a 13 inch wheel. I hope someone else has had better luck as I have a couple to recover. Other shops that do this wanted close to $400 to redo one.

I'd contact MotoLita (in the UK of course) - they'll do it.
Or sell+ship it to me for a song - and I'll have it done...

Shipping it to England for a recover sounds a little pricey. Think I will give the horse tack conditioner a shot. Years ago I used a Wheelskin cover on another TR8 wheel but the separate pieces of leather on the spokes didn't look right.

While shipping to UK will be a little more than US shipping (you guts are spoiled) it shouldn't be that high. We can get stuff from the US for about the same as UK, generally even though there's an ocean in the way. I'd check it out anyway.

Leather conditioner isn't going to replace that missing bit of leather but will soften the cracks some what.

It never ceases to amaze me that people never maintain their leather seats in their cars and most are all cracked. I guess if you trade in your car every few years......

I shipped a complete wheel to the UK a little while ago from New Mexico, it cost me $65 USPS. I didn't think that was a good deal. I think the Postal Service in Canada is a little better going to the UK.
