Bumpers

After removing the bumpers from my DHC and almost needing a forklift to move them I wondered,Has anyone removed the metal armature and replaced it with foam or another means of making it rigid/mountable?Steve..

DHCs had lead weights on the outside corners of the front bumper to help with the wobble.
I removed the weights from mine. I had the wobble in the past, and in the past 6 months after many little fixes, I have no more wobble. I could not tell a difference with and without the weights when it came to the wobble issues.

The harmonic balancers are pretty heavy, I removed mine, not sure how much they help as it's impossible to do a side by side comparison. Would love to see the engineering treatise on their raison d'etre.
The metal armature is very handy to hang the bumper on when reinstalling and doesn't weigh that much.
You want a pretty hefty bar there should you run into anything or anything run into you.

Steve, the bumpers are there because the US passed a law that all cars had to be able to handle a 5 MPH crash without damage. A number of manufacturers installed these bumpers to meet that requirement, including Honda, Fiat & Triumph.
The US auto industry lobbied heavily against the legislation, & it was rescinded, so no US cars suffered this tomfoolery.
Triumph were too broke to reengineer the 7, so the bumpers stayed. They are pretty useless things, which will only transfer any moderate impact to other parts of the cars structure, causing more expensive damage than would a crumple zone. I have no idea if their presence would reduce or increase injury to passengers, it probably depends on the accident.
I doubt they are all that detrimental to a road car, all though I have removed the weights from the 8s bumper, & considered making an alloy thing to carry the plastic cover a few times.
If I was competing a 7/8 in any form of motorsport, the things would be in the tip. All that weight in the ends of the car must reduce it's cornering power, & increase its rate of spin when adhesion is lost. Having said that, I doubt I ever drive my 7 hard enough for them to make any difference.

I always change the convertible bumpers for FHC ones, no noticeable difference but they look much neater.

Buy a hole saw.Its amazing how much weight can be removed from the front bumper.
Leave the rear one as it is as the weight helps with weight distribution.
