Relay de coding

Could some tell me how to interpret the drawing on the below relay? I'm constantly baffled by electrical symbols. This start relay is slightly different from my air conditioning relay. I even have two black relays that are not the same so it appears there are differences even among the same color.

Nick all the #'s are the same a any Bosch relay.
It is just round

Thanks Don. That second site is just what I need.

After finally sorting the headlight motor problems which included wringing out the wiring and totally disassembling one motor I thought I was done with electricity for a while. Then I thought I'd go for a ride in my freshly painted car. But not so fast. No start.

This is a repeat problem I thought I had put behind me. To fix it last time I took the relay apart and cleaned it up. Also found a pushed back spade in the relay connector. Things worked fine for many starts until now. Go figure.

After cleaning my starter relay connector during first winter (I'm sure I did), it started fine for a couple of years. Cleaning the connector again fixed it for another couple of years. Intermittently failed again and cleaned it again. Seems to fail every two years or so. I clean it with Wicked Metal Cleaner and pipe cleaner then flush with brake cleaner. Seems to a weak point. Could be the clamping of the contacts is a little weak? Plan to carry a little cleaner with me in tool kit.

I think you are right. After disassembling my relay when it failed the first time, I found that it would not pass the current when the key was turned. But if I manually closed the contact it would work. I think these relays weaken with use. Refreshing them brings them back but not as good as new.

Also, for those that have not experienced this, don't be mislead in your trouble shooting by the clicking sound of the relay. When I first heard it I thought the relay was working. In the above condition it will make the clicking sound but the contacts still do not pass the required current.

Don't get me wrong, my problem was not with the relay but the connection block. When it happened away from home I didn't have any contact cleaner, I tried wd-40 to no avail. I had removed the relay and it's cover to see if I could buy any juice to the starter if it was corroded but it was like brand new inside. When I got home, I tried a new solenoid to no avail. Only cleaning the connector block (the contacts that plug into the relay contacts) worked.

I think they must have improved the connectors at some point. The '76 connectors are rubbish. The spades inside can easily push back when the relay post makes contact leaving one with the impression that the relay is fully engaged with the connector but in fact it is not. I have started to use a needle nose pier to check them each time I remove and replace a relay. The '80 car has better connectors and with it I don't have this problem.

The other thing is that these Lucas 5 pole relays are not all alike. If you substitute the 5 pole AC relay into the starter relay position, the starter engages as soon as the key is in the run position. They are both 30/51 but have a slight different drawing on them indicating the relay powered from a different pole. This also leads me to believe that one can not go to the local parts store and ask for a 5 pole relay in hopes that it will be wired correctly for our cars.
