How long has your battery lasted?

Postby Hasbeen » 18 Jun 2013 05:34

My 7 has been getting a bit doubtful in starting recently, only just managing a few times, with a fading battery.

It is more than battery to blame. Out weather has not been conducive to 7 motoring. Virtually every day for weeks there has been just a little rain, not enough to do any good for anything, but enough to make your car dirty. Felt quite like Pommy land really, not the least like our winter.

Thus I have only had the 7 out once every 2 or more weeks. It has always had a slight electrical leak, so not too surprised the battery has been low. However I thought I'd check how old the battery is.

My records show last battery fitted in May 2007. Does this sound right? I don't remember batteries lasting 6 years in the past.

She has also had another dose of ignition problem I thought I'd fixed. She just started on the low battery after a 3 week or so rain period, then coughed quite a few times, including a couple of dead cuts, with the rev counter dropping to zero, for a second or so. I was going to take her into the auto electrical shop I use, but after just 12/15Km it had cleaned up & has not returned.

I can't expect them to find anything when it is nor exhibiting, but I really want it found. Obviously something is making a poor connection, which improves with use. Probably moisture, but I'm damned if I know where, I've cleaned everything I can think of.

Meanwhile, with over 2000Km on the new engine the car is flying. I must be kidding myself, but is seams to overtake things doing around 90 to 100Km in top, almost as quickly as the S2000 in third.

I just have to caress the accelerator & she leaps forward. Funnily enough it does not show much interest over 5000, or below 2000, but in that mid range she's great.

My experiences with batteries varies wildly. I can remember initially replacing batteries every 2-3 years - due I assume to the irregular use of the car.

However, my last battery (Bosch) has been in around the same length of time as yours and has survived a couple of long layups where it held it`s charge remarkably well and responded to recharging perfectly, and is still going strong.

When the time comes I will replace with another Bosch just because of personal experience.

The battery in my 7 has been there since September 2004, and is still fine. It's a Fiamm brand that I bought from my local agricultural merchant.

I do use a Ctek battery conditioner during the winter lay up, which I guess helps.

Correct, batteries wouldn't usually have lasted six years in the past, you were lucky to get two, but a modern battery can last six years +. supercass

I have found batteries in cars in regular use last 6+ years. In my fathers Vectra it was 9 years old when it started failing and that was only used for loacl journeys normally. In the 7 they did fail due to the winter layup but I now use a CTEK conditioner and it starts on the button after 5 months. I also use it if I have to go away and am not likley to be using the car for a month or so, although I always find that the Saab (and her Pug 207) starts OK after the 4 week holiday without conditioning.

Wow, I've never seen a battery with a sticker to tell you what cars it fits!

My current battery in the Spider is on year seven. I only just started using battery conditioner this past year. Most winters I had the battery disconnected as I was going the winter projects on it. In the 70's I replaced my OEM battery in the Javelin after year three. I bought a Red Brute Esso battery that had a life time warranty. At year 4 it was replaced for free, after another 4 years it was replaced for free again, after that it was replaced on a prorated basis as the life time warranties disappeared.

The battery is a Worke and despite the name having the umlaut o it was made Wisconsin or nearby State. Don't think they are around now, at least I can't find them on the internet. I guess you can make a product too good.[:p]

Me (in my vehicles...cars/trucks and esp-Bikes) 5-6years Tops! Most batteries (well, in my area of da world) go ka-puts within that time frame. Any longer, and your at risk of getting stuck!
