Apart from the headlight problem (see other post) I found a couple of mystery holes in the floor of my "new" TR7. There is a rectangular hole in the floorpan that you can see the ground through on each side of the car. Its inside the crossmember below each seat, looks like someone has taken out a grommet to get access to add wax and not put them back - see the picture.
Can't find them in the parts list, any ideas where I get some please?

Never seen a hole there, safe for some created by tinworm [:D]

I have the same rectangular hole on BOTH sides of the car and it opens into a crossmember under the floor. The lower crossmember has a couple of oval shaped holes that's why I noticed I could see the ground!!.

I'll add some measurements and a couple morepictures to locate it later.

I have either solved the mystery - or made it worse.

Looking further I found two more holes of the same size with nice rubber grommets in, see the picture. Grommets are approx 40mm by 30mm and all the holes seem to be original.

So any idea of a part number for the grommets?

The new coupe bodyshell that was recently for sale on ebay appeared to have the same oblong holes in the passenger footwell and not the large round hole.

Were the later bodyshells modified/improved I wonder?

These holes are for version 5 Flux Capasitors, but at that age it would have been an after market kit for sure

So looking at these pictures, under normal circumstances would the oblong holes would be hidden from top viewing by the standard soundproofing mat? supercass

So its a puzzle then. If it helps the car was first registered on 01/08/1981 and is VIN:TPADJ7AT214099 so does that make it a late shell?
Maybe it was a change from the earlier shells but these are definitely production holes and I need two of the grommets to fill them.

Hi,

I can remember seeing these square holes on lots of BL products, some even had gromets in them on certain models in certain places where they were visible ie. under bonnets etc, poss Maestro / Montego. At a guess used on production for tool location during assembley [?]

I'm restoring / preparing a classic Mini Cooper for circuit racing. The inner sills have lots of rectangular holes which take grommets. I don't know the exact size hole you've got to fill but Mini Spares stock this grommet to suit. http://www.minispares.com/product/Class ... ommet.aspx 1" long by 13/16". Maybe two cut about could fit?

Alternatively a small piece of 1mm polythene sheet could plug the gap with Tigerseal or similar sealing around the edges from above and below? That would probably be a more permanent fix than a grommet.

That makes it a Canley built car.
As the car in my pictures is a later Solihull car this seems another one in the category <i>"BL-mysteries"</i> [:D]

Just to round off this subject, I asked Robsport about the missing grommets and they knew what I meant but didn't know a part number.
They have sent me a couple of old ones so I will be able to block the holes in my floor properly!
