Hi,

Visited Alastair Flacks stand at the show on Sunday, with 'our ' Tony and Phil, and had a good look at some parts he developed for his rally car, and has decided to supply them to others. I am planning to fit a set of his rear coil spring conversion to my DHC,the shock element is made by AVO which as you know is top notch stuff.The spring are standard motor sport size so a huge range of spring rates available, they can also supplied with two adjustments too.






they look almost to good to stick under a car [8D] !


He also had on display rose jionted lower arms for camber adjustment, once again a quality looking part,






The final part was alloy hubs, these featured a lot bigger out bearing, the small bearing on the stud is a standard one,





He can also supply, normal TR7 /8 AVO shocks and has a adjustable front spring seat struts.

Good pics John, the parts were indeed very impressive quality & developed by a guy who knows what he is talking about.

The units are a straight swap - take out your "normal" springs, fit these in place of the shocks. The shocks use 2 & 1/4 inch diameter springs which are apparently a standard motorsport size, hence the huge range of spring rates available. Alistair told me that due to the different geometry of the rear spring using the coilover, you can use a much softer rated spring - he uses 120lb on his track car (isn't the standard rear spring 160 lb?). This in turn makes the units suitable for road use too, as the suspension is not too hard. Does that make sense to you knowledgeable people out there?

As John mentions, the AVOs can be had with bump adjustment, or bump & rebound to further tune your set up.

It would be very interesting to hear the views of anyone who has actually used these on their car, whether track or road use?

Would the top shock mount on the car need strengthening to install these? They weren't meant to carry the weight of the car and I would think they would need some added strength since the weight of the car would now be placed here and not at the old spring location. Very nice piece of kit, for sure.

They are 30kg/cm (168lbf/in) so have the same effective spring rate as 43kg/cm (241lbf/in) springs mounted in the original location.
Car is much more "lively" on bad road surfaces, but MUCH more fun to drive [:D]

But looks like a nice bit of kit for the asking price.

Did you have to re-enforce the area for the top mount for the shock absorber when you fitted those sexy looking coil overs [?]

No I didn't for the following reasons;
• It would involve welding close to the fuel tank, and I was to lazy to remove it [:D]
• And compared to Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts the rear turrets of the TR7 are pretty strong. But I have to admit that I keep a close eye on the mounting points, but after 4000 pretty hard miles there are no visible problems yet;
• I didn't use the original top mount but had a solid mounts made that spread the load better;







• When I fitted them I knew that within a few years I would dismantle the car and add a welded in cage which will be used to strengthen the turrets (as it stands now work will start this year);

Thanks for that, a mate rallies a mk 2 escort and now you come to mention it, ' our ' cars are far more beefy in that area, like you solution to spreading the load too.

Im just about to order a set of the hubs & Track Control arms, i cant help but think that the TCAs are expensive tho, but it will save me having to get someone to modify mine.

Any of you guys got Tasty front top mounts for 2.25" springs?
