Hi Guys just wondering if anybody knows if a TR7 chassis number is stamped on the motor other than the vin plate! the reason why is my number bears no relevance to the car at all, i found out it was given its number early 93, is there anyway i can retreive the original commission number. It was first registered in 1979 FHC on a V plate, I have been in contact with some really helpful TR people and they are as bemused as me! if you need any more info hopefully i can help! thanks everso in advance. Check the boot channel on the righthand side. What is the registration number of the car?

Maybe the RH rear wing was replaced somewhere in the past?

It would not make any difference how many panels had been changed as the only place you will find the chassis number on a 1979 Canley built car is on the vin plate. The only cars to have the number stamped in the boot channel were the late ones assembled at Solihull.
If this car was registered in early 1993 it could have been built up from a new shell, in this case the car builder would be able to make up his own chassis number. I was asked about this car last week but there was no mention of early 1993 which is the key to this. A lot of people used the body number as the chassis number.

I have never been able to find a number stamped on any of my 7s. This can be a problem, as the vin number on a riveted on plate is not acceptable as identification in my part of Oz.
When registering a car without the information of it's previous registration, you have great trouble with statutory declarations, & proof of purchase ETC.
I have found the best answer is to apply my number punches to the top of the near side strut tower, in the correct order. For some strange reason this is never queried.

Just as Hasbeen said/did -
I did it to my car BEFORE it was registered/inspected here in Sweden. I checked out a Solihull built '81 for how the stamping in the gutter was positioned, how it was turned and how it was done (size, prefix and suffix stamping etc) - and then I did it exactly similar to my car (of course <u>before</u> it was repainted). Never a problem at the inspection...
[If I had turned up at the inspection station with just the three popriveted plates: Body number / Window VIN / Door VIN - I would have been in trouble...
So I had taken the body tag off and pointed them to the door tag AND the gutter stamping. And all was bright smiles and happy inspectors...]

Hi thanks for all you thoughts etc on this TR7 I jus feel it must of had a number prior to the previous owner getting this number assigned to it what it was originally commissioned with, it was first registered in 1979 with a number! but this present one was given to it in 1993 I understand it might have been a car in a transition period between factories, it's a shame the DVLA can't give me the history of it from first registration without people's ID of course. I had an R reg one in the early 80s a 77 model and sold it, 3 years later someone wrote to me for some info which I gladly gave it helped them! still nice to see so many people are helping me too top guys

So the original number is BAM899V? Do you know why the car was given a 1993 registration? That seems strange as even if a car has had say a private plate on it, then when that was removed it would normally be given a new registration related to the original year of registration i.e. a V plate in your car's case. As Chris has said, was the car in fact built up in 1993 & registered as a new vehicle then?
Normally you can apply to DVLA to have the original number transferred back to the car, if it is not in use on another car, but you have to have some pretty sturdy evidence to show that the number was originally given to that car, e.g. a copy of the original V5 and have the car inspected. But in your case I am puzzled as to why the car got a 1993 registration in the first place.

According to the DVLA the car was registered in 1979 with a V reg. Why do you think the vin number on your chassis plate is wrong?
You could send off for a heritage certificate.

Isn't it amazing how bureaucrats are happy when all the paperwork and numbers are in order how they expect them to be. We just need to "guide" them in the right direction. They will rarely question things too deeply as it might generate more work.
It sounds like Odd was spot on with getting his VIN number stamped on even when it really wasn't there originally.
This must happen with other classic cars that were made before VIN numbers became industry standard?
I have heard about disputes where a famous car suddenly appears in two versions. One has the right numbers and the other has the rights bits or combinations of the two. Not really a big problem for us as our cars do not have enough value to make it worth cheating - yet.

Hi Andy thanks for your reply, the 1993 number was issued because the owner i bought it off said that he could not find the orignal VIN number when he wanted to buy parts for it, so his wife said he had to go to the Ipswich office to get it re registered with its current number, i do see where you are coming from with regaurd paperwork prior to 1993! an thanks for the DVLA info, i have also checked the rear wing panels and they all look original, i am thinking its posible had a new door on and they forgot about the VIN plate maybe!the only reason i got to this was that it does not resemble the car, its just a shame i cant get in touch with previous owners to sorce a bit of history bout it! so british motor heritage maybe the answer, again guys thanks for all your imput on this set back!! lol

I don't think Heritage can do anything without the original chassis number, they wont be able to find the build sheet. This is where the information for the Heritage certificate comes from.
The BAM plate was issued in Swindon, you may be able to contact the nearest DVLA office.
