The fuel filler location is the biggest problem for the styling of hard tops for these cars.
Back n the day My sister had a MBG with a J&S GTB hardtop, these were a fast back style that went all the way to the back of the car and replaced the MGB boot lid with it's own integrated boot lid.
These really did look good in the flesh. They made the MGB GT look like a box in comparison.
The other great advantages of this design were a huge improvement in torsional rigidity (handling) and better aerodynamics (speed) made this car a very quick club racer.
Here's an old pic I found The resolution is poor but you should get the idea:
I found one for sale on Gumtree http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/aberfoyle-park/other-parts-accessories/mg-mgb-hardtop-hard-top-roof-j-s-gtb-rare/1007351250
I cant believe how optimistically priced it is,[:0] I imagine at that price it won't be selling very quickly!
Now with a similar concept for the TR-7/8 I imagine something a bit like the Triumph Lynx prototype:
With such a removable hard top you could have a DHC for summer and a practical sports hatch for winter. Surely the best of both worlds.
