hi all wedgers gary here can anyone tell me the dif between 5 speed gearbox and 4 speed box i got a 5 speed of ebay and was told it came out of a tr7 got my box out tonight and compaired them from front of bel houseing to center of gear stick there is a dif of 3 and a half inches what can i do to solve this if i had hair i would be pulling it out now can anyone help me my num is 07835416769 or 02891812697 the new 5 speed is the longer one thanking you all gary

Relax Gary,

Most people prefer the later 5 speed gearbox (LT77) over the earlier 4 speed, particularly if the vehicle is to be used on motorways.

To finish conversion to 5 speed you need to change differential and drive shaft. I'm sure someone north of the equator will help you find the correct parts, but if you're stuck then RobSport or S&S preparations will have what you need.

While doing this you can replace the rear trailing arm bushings and check the petrol tank is first class, as it cannot be got out except by removing the diff.

hi sydney thanks for that but where gear stick comes up into car its still 3 and a half inches longer than old one

Yes, the shifter is farther back. This is why you will be haunting the local junk yards to find the interior mounting plate, neoprene boot, trim gaiter, and assorted little hardware off a later model 5 speed TR7.

Oh, the fun you will have.

As for your conversion project, our esteemed friend Sydney.wedgehead is correct. Unless you wish to do the smart thing and retain your existing 3.63:1 rear end. All you will have to do then is have the drive shaft stretched at your local and very competent drive shaft shop. I have expounded on this topic many times and can only testify my TR7 is a wonderful joy with this conversion.

When you get your LT77, be sure to pull off the rear extension to clean out the accumulated swarf, replace the fiber oil pump gears, and replace the rear most main shaft bearing & oil seal. The new bearing should be shielded on the backside to prevent grit from entering the bearing.
