DHC roll bar

Postby dursleyman » 08 Dec 2012 15:59

I have a roll bar that came with my DHC TR7 that I plan to fit sometime.
I say it came with the car because it was just placed in position, not bolted down, so looked good but not much use if you were upside down.

Its the usual Aleybars type that Rimmers sell. It sits on the rear shelf and with two legs that bolt into the bodywork behind the doors.

Anyone fitted one of these and how difficult/easy are they to fit?

Hi Russ,
Not too much of a problem to fit - are the bolts with the wires with them still in your posession? cutting the holes and feeding them through is a bit of a game.
I had to take mine out again so in the end I have welded in captive
nuts into the panels by the "B" posts.
The only other thing to say is to try and get some really big strong washers so that where the rear bolts go through the parcel shelf into the wheelarches and into the tank recess you will have plenty of strength.

I'll have a look and see if I can find the original instruction sheet that came with mine.

Cheers

Ian, thanks for the comments. The bar came without any fitting kit so I will have to make something up, I was thinking of the captive nut route myself as you suggest.
How difficult are those rear shelf bolts? Are they a problem to access?

Hi Russ,

The centre bolt on the side mounting brackets are already in the body once you peel back the carpet. Use this to start with, then you drill and mount the bar. I used 8mm rivnuts to mount mine which made it easier.

Russ,

There are no real access problems to the rear fittings, two come out into the rear wheel arches (obviously one either side) and two come out into the area just in front/side of the petrol tank.

the two in the wheel arches are easy to do up on your own and the other two may need the help of your trusty assistant.

I had forgoten about John's trick of using "Riv Nuts" on the sides - this is obviously much quicker - I'didn't have one at the time so I made a plate up with the nuts welded to it and then welded it to the sides.

hope this helps,

Cheers

Thanks for all the information guys, I feel much more confident in having a go fitting it now. Not as bad as I thought.

My old rally navigator was round at the weekend and we were discussing various events (he is doing the Monte Carlo Historic soon) and we both fancy a go at the Club Triumph Round Britain Reliability Run.
Hope we won't need the roll bar for that !!
