TR 7, Sprint And TR8 Prices Over Past 6 Months

Hi,

There is a gent who post some very intresting and imformative post on The TR Reg site. He has been recording prices over the past 6 months and have posted the following averages prices car have been going for, personaly found it intresting, so with his permission -

TR7 (DHC) 43 sold @ average £2100

TR7 Sprint (FHC conversion) 5 sold @ average £3000
TR7 Sprint (DHC conversion) 6 sold @ average £2200 (yep, DHCs sell for less)

TR8 (RHD genuine FHC) 0 sold
TR8 (LHD genuine FHC) 0 sold

TR8 (RHD genuine DHC) 0 sold
TR8 (LHD genuine DHC) 3 sold @ average £7300</font id="blue">

Interesting. I would like to see some Tr7/8 spares price comparisons, seems to me that parts have risen hugely over the last year or two.

I saw that post and although its of mild interest it holds no real indication of the market as it does not take into account the condition of the car. From that average you could have a whole bunch of concours cars selling for £5k and then one rust bucket with no floors sold for resto for a £100 and that brings down the valued price of the whole marque! Thats why professional valuation guides have prices structured by car condition not across the board average prices.

Wayne , I guess that could be attributed to the fact that most of these cars are sold through private sources as opposed to many top dollar collector vehicle which pass through public auction houses and/or retail businesses where the quality of vehicles is generally higher......

It must be very hard to professionally appraise the value of a TR7 as most cars are generally of "driver" condition / quality and not pampered & undriven concours restorations.

I find the info resourceful, and would love to see a comparison of the values here in north-America for similar sales averages.
(I'd figure with the exchange rate caluclaed they would prolly resemble the figures quoted ......)

Wow, I think I must be getting a bit overcapitalised with the 7 FHC. This calendar year, with fitting air con, the paint job, & the new fuel tank, I'm all ready at A$7,000, & that's before starting the engine job.

I expect it will be up around A$12,000 by Christmas. That would have bought me something rather tasty in the UK.

Hi All - I must confess that I am Mr Sad!

I will add the Del Lines TR8 into the mix - was that TUK###Y by any chance? If it is I didn't include it in my figures as I didnt know how much it had sold for; I have now added the info to the file.

Regarding the point about average prices, I couldn't agree more. Of course I can see the full distribution curve of the results so its easier for me to segment results into 'projects', concourse etc but I think perhaps a median result would give a better figure as we only need one high priced 'special' (like the DHC Grinnal that sold in Sept for £7k) which pushes up the average or of course, a few cars sold at the other end for the spectrum (ie the DHC 7 which sold for less than £200 earlier this month) to lower it.

BTW, I never intended to 'publish' the data, I was only trying to help out a fellow 7 owner but the exercise has shown to me just how many 7's there are out there and how prices for similar cars can fluctuate depending on location, colour, mileage and specification. I found the pricing of 7V8's particularly helpful as there is no published category for this variant in the mainline press.

I will keep the exercise going until it has achieved its aim (which was to help me establish what is a fair price for a FHC 7 before I actually buy one).

Are these just UK cars, or world-wide? It seem like good numbers to track as long as everyone is aware what a small sample size it is. Since the market is relatively limited, there will most likely be a comparable number sold in the next six months, then the next, then the next... pretty soon it should show an overall trend and the difference between project cars and top-of-the-line examples will get factored into the average. Can we get this same posting again six months from now?

The usual Classic Car Listing & Auction House listings of Condition are I would say are not accurate - Concours / Dealer which should be FHC 4500 & DHC 5000.
Condition 1 FHC must be worth 3000 all day.

Published Prices
Concours / Dealer
FHC 2650 / DHC 4000
Condition 1 Nice Car with no obvious Faults
FHC 2000 / DHC 3500
Condition 2 Car Capabable of regular use with MOT but need some work.
FHC 1000 / DHC 1650
Condition 3 Cars that need a rebuild
FHC 400 / DHC 450

TR8 Original DHC 11,000 / 9500 / 5500 / 2500
Converted V8's would be between TR7 & TR8's

We all know the cost of sticking on a new front wing so 500 quid diff from a super dooper car to a really nice car is way out.

My thoughs are simple - if you have the cash get the best one you can afford even if that is over 'market price' as in the long run as Hasbeen said - costs of doing one up can be high.

My car had low miles when bought & needed no body work - would class it as Condition 1 not Concourse but smiles per mile has been worth it.
Was it worth the price I paid - yes to me.
Was it worth that to others - yes as he had 2 offers unseen for it just below the asking price.
Me I lived 25 miles away from him & saw it first 30 mins after phoning him - right place right time which goes for all purchases.

Rob - your exercise is a good one but every TR7 is different in condition & originality.
It is not like buying a new Ford Fiesta when all are the same & new so price can be different at each dealership.
All cars have to be taken on merit & what you want to do with it , restore, improve, show or just have fun for a few years & scrap it.
Anyway good luck in your search but don't leave it too long [:D]

I've had three offers for my 1977 auto coupe way,way above the £1350 average price stated. Neil has got it spot on for me.

Interesting stuff, another source of errors might be non paying ebay bidders!
We found a local car, advertised on e bay,which looked good and included some spare parts such as wheels, exhaust, seats, air box, manuals etc
We bid up to about £1900 which we thought was fair then pulled out. Someone finished the auction at about £2200 but didn't pay up, we picked up the lot for £1750 and didn't feel robbed- car had 13 months MOT body work sorted, alloys, low miles etc
If the guy had re advertised he could easily have got a better price but he was so hacked off with being messed about that for him a buyer in the yard with cash is worth a bit more than a virtual bidder whose money he might never see!
