Would these things fail an MOT?

Postby Dave Dyer » 15 Oct 2012 10:44

Would these things fail an MOT?

Internal heater blower only operating on max speed.
No external/internal door locks, so at present no way to lock the car.
Only 1 door mirror (and internal rear view mirror).

I'm at the point where I'm just working on my TR7 to get it through an MOT and then finish all the odd bits during the winter. Well thats the plan!

Cheers, Dave

I am 99% sure that blower dosen't come into it
as long as the doors open and close and catch properly then i think there fine
and as long its the drivers door mirror there shouldn't be a problem either however John will be along later to confirm MOT MAN

when my motorhome was MOT'd recently the mot'er actually put an advisary on saying no power steering its a non power steering model they can be funny buggers sometimes but our John is spot on[;)]

Gaz - just done the same - coffee mid morning ( off the coast of Maine USA )
Totally agree that MOT Testers have a world of their own.
When I bought my car I got it re tested even though it had plenty of MOT.
In 234 miles & 4 months later they were quite different !

Date of test: 27/02/2009
Certificate issued (Pass)
Odometer reading: 6,737 Miles
Test number: 6745380xxx
Test station name: xxx SERVICES LIMITED
Test station number: 2662xx
Test station telephone number: 0197768xxxxx
Test class: IV
Test expiry date: 26/02/2010
Advisory Notice issued
Nearside Front Shock absorber has a slightly reduced damping effect (2.7.5)
Offside Front Shock absorber has a slightly reduced damping effect (2.7.5)
Nearside Rear Shock absorber has a slightly reduced damping effect (2.7.5)
Offside Rear Shock absorber has a slightly reduced damping effect (2.7.5)
Nearside Headlamp not in good working order but not adversely affecting beam image (1.2.4a)
Offside Headlamp not in good working order but not adversely affecting beam image (1.2.4a)
Nearside Headlamp not in good working order but light output not severely reduced (1.2.4a)
Offside Headlamp not in good working order but light output not severely reduced (1.2.4a)
Nearside Rear Parking brake Your vehicle has only just met the required park brake efficiency. It would appear that the braking system requires adjustment or repair. (3.7.A.9/10)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Date of test: 22/06/2009
Certificate issue refused (Fail)
Odometer reading: 6,971 Miles
Test number: 6141138xxxx
Test station name: xxx & CO MOTOR ENGINEERS
Test station number: V101xxxx
Test station telephone number: 01904 60xxxx
Test class: IV
Reason(s) for refusal to issue Certificate
Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content excessive (7.3.B.2a)
Advisory Notice issued
Nearside Front wheel bearing has slight play (2.5.A.3c)
Offside Front wheel bearing has slight play (2.5.A.3c)
Centre Exhaust has a minor leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2a)
All 4 tyres cracking between tyre treads

Was a good bargaining tool - the web is a great thing.
Suspension was 30 years old, lights are seal beams on the first MOT yes tyres were the original 30 year old Goodyears & yes carbs were sticky as 30 years old on the 2nd one.

Now stick to the same garage who did the last test every year plus he only charges 30 quid a test.
He has old Jags himself but still strict - was approx 0.2 % high on emmisions & had a look of fail in his eyes until he floored it & we watched the timer count down on the machine saying all within limits.
Went home for a beer afterwards [:D]

Hi Dave,

As Neil an Gaz say, heater not in the test, doors have to open, this can be a reason to refuse test a vechicle as you cant check for corrosion, as far locking not part of the test. Mirror's are as stated.

On the subject of MOT's when I register a test now I can see the 3 previous test milages, a good way to find a clocked car and a possible dodgy car [:)] but obivously not a fail.

Cheers John

Thanks Chaps for the advice.

Just a few things more to do before I book it in for the test.

I've 'nipped' up the front wheels bearings to remove the end float, as in the past the MOT man has failed a car on wear in the bearings, even when I've explained they need to be set with a bit of free play. so I've always done this and then reset them after the test.

Neil, I notice on the test that failed, both front bearings had 'slight play' so this might of been something similar!

One thing I'm dreading is trying to set the mixture right so it passes. I've just bought a Colortune, but haven't used it yet and not really sure if this will be accurate enough?

Cheers, Dave

I had to 'educate' my local MOT tester with regard to taper wheel bearings. The first time he had the car in (some years ago) he had not experienced a car with them on the front (only a modern Vauxhall with them on the rear apparently). He was used to modern hubs with roller bearings and no float. However, he is fairly young and with a bit of explanation he has never forgotten since.

Dave,
I would choose an old school garage for the MOT - if the car fails on emissions they should be able to sort it out with their equipment for an hour's labour.
Cheaper than a re test.
Might be worth getting a Home Tune Guy out - I did this & for 50 quid he set the carbs after I rebuilt them, timing checked & points set. Well worth it.

Yes the garage just nipped up the Front bearings like yours - saying that I replaced the struts & all bearings last years using the 1/4 turn back rule & it passed a few months ago ok.
