New Radio

It is just sitting in place right now, but I am pretty happy with how it looks (even looks like it could be a radio from 1980).
It is a cheap radio ($30 usd), and I am sure that the sound will not be great, but as long as I can listen to something and it looks good, I will be happy.
Model is Pyle PLR16MUA

You may be surprised how good it sounds! I had a similar Pyle installed until I got my hands on an original radio. The good thing is, for $30 you can hardly go wrong. Bonus feature of the one I had was the illumination of it is green.

I have no idea if I need to get new speakers yet. I have owned the car over 4 years now, and there are speakers in it, but I have never had a working sterio in it.
Hopefully I will get it wired up tomorrow. It gets so darn hot in my garage this time of year, so I don't get much done outside. In a few months when everyone else is putting their cars away, I will start enjoying my car more.

You can get retromod speakers (4.5") from Moss UK that should fit existing door opening. Probably not the best sound but is going to be a lot better than the moisture soaked 30+ year old speakers that might still be in there (as in mine).

Do you have your new Pyle head unit hooked up yet? How's it sound? What about speakers?
We are in need of a new one and I saw your post. Looks tempting. I see the radio trim is wider than the space between the trim around the heater control levers. Do you see this as a problem?
Thanks.

I still need new speakers and an antenna. If I crank it up to the max, I can then hear a little bit out of the speakers. I haven’t spent much time on the car since I put the radio in. Hopefully I will have some time to play with it in the next few weeks.
I am very happy with the fit. There is a trim piece that goes on once the radio is in place. The radio fits in the hole fine, and then the trim piece covers the gap. I did shave off some of the trim piece because the radio goes in at an angle.

Hi RJS,
Greetings from darkest Africa. Unfortunately Pyle do not seem to be represented her & their web site does not show the PLR16MUA . do you have the dimensions (particulary the depth) so that I can compare with some of the models on their site & then do an electronic purchase?

Dimensions: 7''W x 4.72''D x 1.96''H
When I was originally looking, the best buy website showed all radios dimensions, so I could compare all radios (they have since changed the site). The pyle radios (no CD) were generally the shallowest (less depth).

The Pyle PLR16MUA can be seen on Pyle's website. Here is the link.

The dimensions are 17.8cm wide x 12.0cm deep x 5cm high. They have a number of receivers that are these same dimension.
I just purchased a Plye PLR34M from Amazon. It has the same dimensions as the PLR16MUA, but had a few more features that I enjoyed. We hooked it up two days ago and so far we really like it.
Here is the link for this model receiver.
