Mystery Screw

While cleaning out the car I found this screw under the edge of the drivers side (left) floor mat. Its about 2&1/2 inches long and probably came from under the dash. Anyone recognize it or have an idea where it belongs?

It is from the steering column cover.

X2 on the cover.

there are two of them in there.

dont overtighten the screw when you put it back as the bezels are known to break.

I was missing that screw (cover held on by one) so I ordered it from Octagon on next parts order but got one half that length. I found the missing screw under the molded carpet when I took it out. No idea how it got there, for those who know a molded carpet it's not easy to get from under steering column past raised edges.

Easy way to install this screw:

Cut two 2" long piece of fuel line hose. Turn bottom cover up side down. Put the screws in the holes and let them drop all the way down. Push the pieces of fuel line hose into the openings.

The fuel line hose will hold the screws up while you align the screws into the connector and it will also automatically align the Philips head screwdriver to the screw. Once install, just pull the hoses out of the bottom of the cover.

How roo'd!

FWIW I've managed to patch up a split in the plastic that holds the brass thread thing in the top shroud with a very small hose clamp. It's been doing the job for about 2 years so it is a permanent fix now. Don't even bother with glue.

Now, I'm off to do some olympic gloating.
