5 Speed tranny filler/level plug location.

I know I am getting old my eyes arent as good as they use to be but cannot seem to find the filler/level plug on the tranny. Anyone know where it is? I hope you all get as big a chuckle from this silly question as I am thinking about it myself. LOL

Don,
I have to give you a big thank you. I pulled the drain plug after taking out the filler plug and only a few drops came out. No metal on the magnet on the drain plug. (Minimal)I have now refilled with 75-90 synthetic and will watch for leaks. Thanks again

75W-90 synthetic is for the rear axle differential.

Not necessarily, the Castrol SMX-S (which was a synthetic gear oil with a viscosity of SAE 75W-85),
is now superseded by Castrol Syntrans 75W90.

Sure,
but Castrol Syntrans <u>IS</u> a modern MTF...

And I'm sure he's put 'ordinary' synthetic 75W-90 EP hypoid gear oil in his poor LT77 - a fluid best suited for the differential.
And this living in a country where both the Pennzoil SMTF and the GM STF Liquid Gold fluids are easily available!

Hub, I put Pennzoil Synthetic Syncromesh in thinking it would be better than the recommended Pennzoil Syncromesh, synthetic is better than regular right? It was better than the original oil that was in there when I bought the car which worked well in the 95F heat of California but not good in the PNW temperate climate of Wahington and BC. With the synthetic I still had to double clutch into second when cold, it was like it was too slippery for the syncros. I switched to the Pennzoil Syncromesh and shifting is now good.

I've read some have used Redline MTF (synthetic), a favourite with the BMW boys and the bottle says especially formulated to provide the right friction for the syncros (meaning other synthetics aren't?). Redline has doubled in price since the tsunami as some of the additives were made in Japan. I wasn't prepared to spend $50 on a test so stuck with Pennzoil Syncromesh. The LT-77 is one of those transmissions that have a narrow range of oil provided friction to make the syncros (specifically 2nd gear) work so is very manufacture dependent.
