Radio options

Vicki's radio/cassette is looking pretty shabby (now her interior is refurbished) and a small knob has gone missing. Couldn't tune in to much today either so maybe it's time to think about a replacement. I know most units are too deep to fit without protruding. Anyone have any tips on what fits? Radio/cassette or cd even iPod dock but looking reasonably old/original is preferable.

Often you can find old knobs for old car radios on e bay. If your set is original I would try to keep it. supercass

I've always had the idea of cutting out the Rheostat/Cig lighter part and putting it where the radio is so that the radio can go in its spot, looks like a normal aftermarket radio would fit there, has anyone tried this?

If you did this I think you might have to fit it at an odd angle to clear the transmission hump behind the console. supercass

My Car did not come with a radio when I bought it - just the plastic insert tray to fill in the hole.

Found a new boxed radio from 1981 on E-Bay .

It came with 2 plates so you can fit it into the original hole.

You can just see the black plate round the edge on the front of the radio & at the back was a similar steel plate with luggs, to fit at the back of the radio to sandwich the radio onto the plastic hole outer edge of the radio hole.
When you tightened the hex screwed washers on the Volume & Tuning spindles it tightened it all up.The plastic black washers & knobs hide the fixing washers.
The plates were simple sheet metal & easy, if required to make, but have seen them at autojumbles as a pack probably sold in car acc. shops years ago.

It has FM & a cassette player - grabbed my daughters old cassette to I-Pod adapter after she finished with it so can listen to my I Pod through the cars speakers.

I did buy a Radiomobile MW/ LW Radio before that but you absolutely cannot pick up any quality radio stations now a days - so sold that onto a Stag Owner.

Looks great Odd, so good it was posted twice[:D].

Seriously, this is one way to sucessfully install a modern radio. I have also heard but not seen that you can install a head, this being a short version of a modern radio but without the CD part which requires the length. It uses a MP3 player connection and/or a cd changer in the boot I believe, again herad of but not seen.

I'm puzzled here, surely if you can find a modern radio to fit in the bottom of the console, the same radio should fit in the space provided in the centre of the console. supercass

Only one night this week I saw a post on another website where someone was showcasing a modern unit that was small enough to fit the TR7.

I've looked, but can't find it - I think it was on here somewhere:

http://www.tssc.org.uk/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=55&func=showcat&catid=202&page=3

Might not have been in the TR7 section btw...

There are also older posts on this site somewhere where someone found a modern unit that fitted. Might have been from Halfords?

I'd personally go for an old fashioned unit. They sound pants so I don't even bother turning mine on - just enjoy the engine instead. However this would be different if I was travelling hundreds of miles or doing some regular commuting.

old radio units look the part but to my mind the sound is very poor.
I am sure there are companies who update old car radios to be ipod
friendly.Found on ebay. dave

If you get a face off type stereo you can have wires connected to the pull off face and have the base unit under the seat, in the glove box, boot etc. The face can then placed anywhere you like, even mounted on the sun visor if you wanted.
