... a rolling 30 year vehicle tax exemption scheme is something we've had in Sweden for decades.
This passed new years day the 1982 vehicles started to get excempt (depending on first registration date).
Never been challenged by the politicians/bean counters as far as I know. You should direct your
government to study/evaluate the Swedish example...

(And mind you:
we still have heaps of old Volvo tanks on our roads. If old enough - they're excempt as well...)

So a 1982 Volvo 760 would just squeeze in. I suppose they are just as much part of our motoring history. They were a somewhat alternative choice when they were first introduced here, because their style bucked all the trends. supercass

We don't have vehicle tax but do have rolling 25 year for collector plates. One set of collector plates/insurance ($200) is applicable for up to 3 approved cars (must be original) makes it cheap to have multiple cars. Next year the Toyota will qualify, use the Spider in summer, the 4x4 Tercel in winter (in case it snows).

Here, in Washington State, we have emissions testing every two years for cars older than 5 years and younger than 25. This only covers the major metropolitan areas, rural areas don't have it. Across the river in Oregon, anything newer than a 1974 model has emissions testing for life. Again, I think that it is only for the metro areas. The guy that I bought my car from had it registered at his father's address way out in the country somewhere. Neither state has a safety inspection and I don't know why. It rains quite a bit here and I frequently park next to cars that have really bald tires. It makes you wonder what condition the rest of their car is in.

Hi John,

Signed it a while back, cant do any harm and let hope its successful. Trouble not much chance of this goverment giving sod all away [:(!] Even though it would help the already big classic car scene and related buisness grow and via this more tax into goverments pockets ( to waste [:(!] ) I will now step down of my soap box !!!

Cheers John

Probably not a 100,000 classics left to get enough votes?

I know a few on here are members of Club Triumph, whose bi-minthly magazine always carries a newsletter from the FBHVC (Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs).

Some of this newsletter content is a bit "dry", but in a recent edition there was a report about the 30 year VED exemption. I don't have the magazine to hand, but the gist of it was that the FBHVC did not consider that there was much point in pursuing the restoration of the rolling 30 year rule at the moment.

IIRC the reasoning was that the rolling exemption was unlikely to be restored in the current economic climate as it would be perceived in political circles as a benefit to a minority interest group i.e. classic/historic car owners in general!

So while it cannot do any harm to sign the petition, it seems that the idea is not high on the politician's agenda right now. Not enough votes in it, I guess [:0]

I went to sign it but it advised I'd already done so............

I can't see the government giving away the opportunity to collect any cash at the moment.
