Stripes or not?

I know this topic has come up before, but I'm thinking of striping my Canley built TR7 DHC. I never used to be a fan of O.T.T stripes but now on a 70's / 80's car they look quite retro. I'm keen on originality and have looked at some of the striping kits that were supplied with the vehicle when new, mostly to exported vehicles. These range from quite tasteful to bizarre, by far the most bizarre I have seen are on the TR7 supplied to Road and Track for their September 79 publication. I quite like the Jubilee stripes and they certainly look good on the yellow FHC on e bay recently. Not too sure how they would look on my Pharaoh gold convertible though, and the way the sweep over the top of the bonnet might not suit the more conservative styling of the DHC, and I think I would omit the huge TR7 lettering below the rear cruise light. I also quite like the shadow striping kit, not readily available, but probably relatively easy to copy. Also not sure how NOS would stand up to use, after all, they may have been in a paper bag, but the adhesive is still around 30 years old. Anyone have any suggestions or advice? Regards, supercass

Hi, I sourced 'new old stock' stripes and the adhesive was well past its best so I gave them to a local graffix firm who made exact replicas. These are saved in their files now so another set in any colour can be redone easily, if you decided on this type I would happily sort this for you.

Cheers, Paul

I'd like to see that yellow Jubilee car you mentioned Supercass. Don't suppose anyone has the link?

Typically I'd just finished the article all about the Jubilee special edition of 1977 so if this is really a genuine car, or even a car with the genuine silver stripes it would have been a jolly handy find.

Ooopsie! Looks like the marketing boys didn't get the news for this ad the transmission for 1977 U.S. specifications was the LT77 5-speed gearbox. Not to mention the rest of the paragraph regarding gearing ratios.

That, or they weren't paying attention again. Don't you hate it when that happens?

By the way, I never saw this stripe kit. And, what do the initials on the drivers door say? Is it TRS, or TR8, or TSF? My bifocals must need cleaning.

Sorry, think I might be confused (doesn't take much). I think the edition I was looking was the Anniversary edition. supercass

I seem to recall there being a special edition upon which you could have your choice of initials placed on the door. I would guess these represented the drivers initials. I like the blurb about corrosion proofing! supercass

Lots of good looking stripe patterns out there. But to get back to the original issue - I wouldn't even consider using an original striping kit for anything except a pattern for having a new one made. The vinyl is likely to be brittle, the adhesive either dried or turned into nasty goo. After a while old striping tape sometimes won't come off the backing and can be a PIA. Even as a pattern you should make sure it hasn't shrunk.

Since the whole point of striping is to look good, you don't want to use something that doesn't!

The brochure pictured was a federal spec car exclusively sold in the uk. This is why it had the four speed box.
You could have any three initials on each door to purchasers requirements, just like the Jubilee version.
Part of the Leyland International Tax free sale scheme i believe.
