Another little job I would like to do before winter driving is to fix the wipers. The drivers side with the pantograph type link seems to be set up wrong as the blade doesn't clear up to the screen pillar properly.
Hard to explain, but the sweep ends up to an angle of about 20-30 degrees past vertical with the bottom of the blade going far enough but the top stopping short if that makes sense.
They end up parked OK when you switch off, so it seems the arm is set up wrong. I have looked in the manual but cannot see any notes on how it should be set.
Anyone else have any suggestions please?

With the information you have given it sounds to me as if the wipers function properly [:p]
Bear in mind that the area that is swept by the wipers does vary with driving speed, amount of water etc.

Beans, I don't think I expained it very well as it a bit hard to describe. I thought the idea of the mechanism was to get the blade roughly parallel to the screen pillar at the end of the stroke?
On mine the bottom of the blade goes MUCH farther so it almost touches the pillar but the tip is still about 5 or 6 inches away, leaving a large unswept area in the top corner. Does that make sense?
It seems wrong and I wondered if rotating the fixed end of the mechanism will change how it sweeps but don't want to disturb it un-necessarily.

Might be that the wiper arm isn't fitted correctly to the spindle.
When (re)fitting the wiper arms I always let the wiper motor run without the wiper arms fitted.
This is to make sure you have the proper park position when you switch them of.
Than fit the arms so that the wiper blades are almost parallel with the windscreen's lower edge ...





For a RHD car you'll have to mirror this image [:D]

Just checked mine - they sweep a larger area than yours.

I never manage to upload photos here, but will try and explain what I suggest you try. In your third photo you show the drive end of the main arm and the secondary pivot arm. Try rotating the base fixing of the pivot arm by 2 or 3mm in an anticlockwise direction (looking at the wiper from the front of the car)

While it's been a while since I've had mine off, going from memory, there is a notch that positions the link and is basically not adjustable. It may be worn or out of position. It seems yours should move the wiper a little more (more link action). As the mechanism wears the will be less wiper blade rotation (not to be confused with wiper arm rotation).

<font size="2">OK guys, reading you comments and looking at the geometry I reckon HowardB is right. Rotate the collar that operates the extra arm a few mm anti-clockwise and it should push the blade tip a bit farther over.
Lucky I bought some new sealing washers a little while ago just in case.
When I feel brave and get a nice day I will give it a try and report back.

A bit of water on the screen to lubricate the wiperblades will also help with the area being swept.

Running the wiper system without water is similar to turning the steering wheel when stationary - not good for our cars. Add some water and then try the wipers - they shouldn't wack any part of the windscreen surround.

Took notice of the "dirt" mark on my screen today. Pretty much the same as what you show. Not a full wipe. With wet screen and at higher speed I know they wipe a bit further but since the car is seldom out in the rain this isn't the norm.

<font size="2">Don't panic guys, they were stopped when I took the pictures. Just used the ignition switch on/off to get them where I needed to so you could all see what the problem is. I wouldn't run wipers on a dry screen, been around cars too long for that.</font id="size2">

ever since I found out about Aquapel ( by PPG) at work, I do a treatment per year and rarely have to use my wipers.......

I've used Rainex in the past (on other cars) but never liked the action.

This pic is abnormal and makes me think that there is excessive wear in pantograph arm.


Pull the wiper arm and check for wear in the base plate socket, pivot pins and holes, or a bent pin on the seating cone (latter seems most likely).

I set up my driver's side wiper so that the sweep end point nearly touches the A pillar (Aus is RHD) and don't care about how parralel the stop point is to the scuttle. Similarly, I set the near side wiper so that it has a good overlap at its end point over the driver's side lower stroke (thus the centre of screen gets max wiping).
