choke cable

I have two std 2.0L UKspec TR7s, one an 1979 early Canley model and an 1981 Solihull model. The choke cables are different, earlier car has a twist lock cable and later car a simple pull cable.
The twist lock cable was stiff so I (foolishly) sprayed WD40 around knob. Its not stiff now however, the twist lock is slipping which isn't helpful during cold running!
Any hints how to make my twistlock choke cable grip again?
Also I've been looking for new cables but only see twist lock version available. In my experience the simple pull cable is more pleasent to use, where can I get one?
Also I assume the simple pull cable were a late introduction on teh TR7 production run - would simple pull cable be out of place in a 1979 early Canley model ?
all dumb and trivial questions I know, but any replies appreaciated...
