Headlining restoration

Well, I've been contemplating getting a new headlining because the edges were all stained, but it turns out that shoe whitening is the same 'arctic white' colour and after spending less than £5 ive managed to restore the headlining to almost new condition.
If you're planning the same make sure yours is the same arctic white because some are off-white.
If this hadn't worked I would have taken the headlining out and resprayed the whole lot with white vinyl/leather re-colour spray at £10 which would also be cheaper than replacing.

Hi,
I was told that the brown stains in the headlining were the sign of the backing breaking down after all these years. Head linings both with and without sun roof are available already made up from Revington

I don't think the staining is caused by a breakdown of material as it seems to be the areas of around glass so would guess it is from condensation or frost build up and the heat. Could be wrong though [:)]
Also the headlining comes in off-white and bright-white and the latter is usually more expensive (about 2x), and of course the extra time taken to replace it. You may also need to replace the fixings as well if they get broken when replacing the material.

I have always assumed it was from an adhesive, of from one of the additives in the compound of the rubber used in the door sealing moulding, migrating into the vinyl.

I agree with Hasbeen, I also have been told it was something to do with the adhesive, (and the way the factory slopped it on) most of the older cars suffer from this ugly brown around the edge staining, and when I had a hood lining made and fitted to one of my Triumphs a few years back the upholster was saying the best prepared adhesive application is very important to the future of the hood lining as many factories where far too messy when it came to gluing.
Apparently excess glue soaks through the material and after years the adhesive discolours leaving a nasty brown stain[?][:D]

Well, I humbly bow down to those with greater knowledge and accept it could be the liberal use of adhesive coming through - never taken a headlining out before so can't use experience as a guide!

Paul, why it happens is not very important, only a little interesting to prevent us repeating the mistakes.
Much more important is that you have Found a cure for the problem, which doesn't involve totally emptying the bank.
Thanks.

When I restored ACG97, it was possible to buy new headlinings for £30 from S+S, I think they may be a bit dearer now but I needed one because the original was torn. They are much easier to fit if the car has no sunroof. The early cars have the bright white cloth with heavy imprint , the later cars have off white and light imprint.
