I just acquired a screw type oil filter adapter but it came without a filter. Does anyone know what type they usually use or are there any ones to avoid?

Stay away from Fram, they make the worst ones. Purolator or WIX is the best. (last test I read, a few years ago). Google oil filter tests, there are lots of independent tests out there.

My filter came with the kit, I fitted it before I heard it had a reputation, at least with the Fram code you can get another make from the local motor factors.
