5 speed gear selector lever

Postby bhamsailor » 08 Aug 2011 23:23

Still trying to remove the lever. The end at the bottom seems like a good place to strike with a hammer and it should release from the yoke. I have the housing upside down in a vise and have removed the split ring that secures the plastic cup the ball fits into. I tried to pry and broke the plastic lip in spare part that happens to have the shorter selector lever I want to use. Do not want to break the one in the unit that is coming out.
Have read your info. on just pulling up with a cloth wrapped around the base and since I am 70, I don't seem to have the strength to make that happen. A few strikes with the hammer do not seem to do anything either. Appreciate any help anyone might have.

Hi Michael,

This should fall out of the gearbox extension on the LT77 gearbox.

The gearstick is held in at three points

1. The cup over the top of the ball has a tab on it that is usually obscured by road dirt and grease. The tab has a small bolt holding it down and can be easily undone from the top. The tab faces rearwards and directly above the prop shaft

2 and 3. The ball has a dowel out each side that is held by the arm of a spring over it. Just get a big screwdriver in there to lever it off. The dowels point at the driver on one side and the passenger on the other.

NOTE: The reverse detent plunger has a spring and nylon lug on it that will fly away when you extract the gearstick. This is against the front of the ball and you should cover the thing with a rag so it all falls to the ground when you gently, no hammer, pull out the gearstick.

There seems to be a disconnect between what Michael seems to be describing and what I remember the mechanism to be (it's as Jolyon describes). If I lived on the mainland I'd pop on down across the line and have a look and give a hand.

As Alice said: "curiouser and curiouser".

There is a picture in this link that shows two for the three lock points of the shift lever: http://www.forum.triumphtr7.com/topic.a ... C_ID=15253

Thanks for all the help. I was working with a spare gear shift housing that had a shorter shift lever that I want to use. I turned the housing up side down and struck with a hammer on the end of the shift lever. I had already removed the cup from the top and the split ring. It released from the plastic holder in the yoke, but broke the plastic holder. I am hoping the one still in the car will be usable as I do not see that those are available. The ball on the end of the lever is still on. I imagine it is pressed on, but it can be used as is. Again thanks.

Mike
