5 speed transmission exchange

Postby bhamsailor » 27 Jul 2011 22:45

Am in the process of doing a exchange install and need to know a few things. First, there are two "circlips" holding the shifter in its socket. I can not see how to get that clip, a round ring, out?

Second, there is a little bit of motion in a back and forth movement on the 1st motion shaft. Is this normal or do I need to replace something behind it? Like the rear bearing? When installing, does spline part of the 1st motion shaft need to have grease? Since it is in the housing for the clutch, I am thinking not. My manual does not say either.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Are you talking about the shift lever?

There is a large spring shaped like a bobby pin on top of the shift housing. Use a screw driver to move the arms of the spring past the pins of the lever and under the screw heads to hold them out of the way. Then there is a 10mm screw that holds the shifter cup in place.

Remove the screw and lift of the cup. NOW! wrap a shop cloth around the bottom of the shift lever and then holding the cloth in place, pull straight up on the lever. The lever will come out and the cloth will catch the anti rattle spring and slider.

Thanks Clay . .that was a very good answer on another question. How to get the shifter out as the split ring holding it in is located in a hard to get at spot? now that it is off, how do you get the split ring back on?
My question was on the "motion shaft" at the front of the tranny. the one that gets fitted with the release bearing? What kind of movement should it have? Back and forth and up and down?
Maybe you could answer another problem I am having. Doing a brake job and the rear brake spring assortment is different than the manual. My E-Brake has always been very hard to pull on. Looking at the springs and reading what I can . .they may be in the wrong places or the wrong ones altogether. Would you have a picture of you rear brakes with the outside cover off? That would sure help me. The 5 speed 7 shares the same brakes as the TR8

Did someone say brakes? Click here!

Also, go to my public folder, Triumph Articles, and there is a transmission training manual and the TR7man.pdf

Hi Clay, Brake job complete to the install of the drums. They will not go on? I know there must be something else to do to make them go on. Something to do with the adjuster maybe? Could really use your help. The step by step pictures were fantastic. Now if the drums would only go on . . help.

Just loosen the adjuster all the way off then front the drum up to the brake shoes.

I then front the drum up to the shoes, hook on the bottom one (just a little), sort of and tilt the top shoe towards me as I bring the drum up to vertical. Once hooked on that lip a lump of wood will push/hammer it on.

If your drums are worn you could have the lip taken off and this will make it even easier. If you have brand new brake linings it may also need that lip off the drum as the fit may be too close with modern linings.
