Hi all
Just failed MOT on rear brakes
Poor efficiency on hand brake and foot brake
Fronts are ok
Checked today and everything is free and lubricated.
Shoes look a bit worn and shiny.
Any suggestions much appreciated

Check beneath the rubber piston seals on the wheel cylinders. My had low efficiency on the rear last year (enough to pass though). They had looked fine when I checked inside the drums superficially but when I got back I peeled back the rubbers and there was slight fluid leakage so I changed the cylinders. It goes in again next Saturday so hope it will all be OK (might be tempting fate!).

Hi Tony,

As my learned friend Alan says but would also check the linkage for handbrake behind the shoes as these seize.

Check the parking brake linkage on thye axle

Carefully clip up the adjuster manually with the drum off and slip the drum back on may be nec to file out the wear ridge. Also 'deglaze' the shoes

Have at this, the best article i ever seen on fitting rear shoes, to be found on 'our' JClay site.

The bigger 9" drums on the later cars are MUCH better - worth upgrading to them if doing a general overhaul of the rear brakes anyway.

Taxed and back on the road.
Bought my son age 23 a 1972 Mini Clubman(Cheap ins and free road tax)
Taking it off road when mot runs out end of june for some repairs and a respray.
Giving him the TR7 to use while mini is off the road.
Gave him a go in it today,he loves it.
