Saab engine

I've been trying to find a US source for engine parts aside from the usual suspects. Saab used the TR7 engine for a while. I thought some Saab dealers may have some old Saab 99 parts about. Does anyone know which years Saab used the Truimph engine? Is the Saab B engine basically the same as the earlier engines from Triumph?

I know that Saab used the Triumph slant 4 in 1709cc and 1854cc capacities, after that i'm not too sure as their 2.0 was 1985cc, not 1998cc as the TR7 is. Not sure why the 1709cc slant 4 was made, perhaps something to do with Swedish tax laws? Also not to be confused with the Ford V4 1.7 as this engine was 1699cc.
Many of the parts from a Saab 99 from about 1970-76 will fit the Dolomite engine (1854cc) but i'm not sure which ones. By natural progression, some parts will fit the 7 engine but only the parts that are common between the 7 and the Dolly. Someone may know which parts specifically are interchangeable, sadly i don't.

I've often wondered if the later Saab Turbo engine could fit a TR7 or even a Dolomite - reckon that would be an awesome conversion if so!

I was thinking along those lines also. That Turbo Saab was suppose to put out about 140 HP yet I have not heard of anyone doing this conversion.

Seems like somebody was discussing this recently and there was some question about room for the turbo plumbing. Having once owned a non-turbo 99, I can't imagine that the 7 has any less space under the hood. It would be a nice upgrade if it would fit. Lots of Saab info on the web. There is probably strong demand for those turbos, too. http://www.saabnet.com/

My son has a '90 900 turbo. The head is way bigger than the Triumph 2.0, it is a 16 valve, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't fit. It was rated at 160 hp and 141 ft/lbs . It sits backwards in the engine bay, with what we'd consider the front of the engine up against the firewall. The transmission forms the oil pan so you'd need to make up a sump of some kind. The exhaust manifold is a real simple looking thing with the turbo attached to the front, or in our case the back. I looked and I don't have any pictures of the engine bay of the Saab. Gentle Men. It is my duty to burst the balloon of your fantasies here and now. It has been thoroughly cussed & discussed countless times and the ugly conclusion is, NO! The SAAB engine cannot be made to fit our TR7's.

Shame the Saab lump won't fit - 140bhp of turbo-nutter engine sounds good to me!!
Re the 1990 900 models, some of the turbos were 16 valve, if memory serves they were badged "900 Turbo 16" in the UK, not sure about anywhere else.

The "original" Saab turbo was an 8 valve, breathing through a single 175CD Stromberg and i think the basic engine might be possible to squeeze under the bonnet of a 7. That said, i'm not sure there would be the room for the turbo and all it's plumbing, not to mention the fact that as has rightly been pointed out, Saab put the engine in backwards and use a transaxle with combined engine/gearbox sump.

All in all, for 140 bhp, not really worth the grief! Would be easier to get a Montego (or Maestro but they're rare!) Turbo engine and fit it for 150bhp. I don't know if the Maestro/Montego ranges made it to the other side of the pond, but they are a family hatchback and saloon range with engines from 1275cc to 1994cc, the latter being the "O" series which was also used in the SD1 so will easily mate to the LT77 5 speed TR7 gearbox.

Maybe worth a thought? Or if you wanted serious fuel economy and weren't too worried about the traffic light grand prix, an "O" Series turbo diesel, still built under the name Perkins Prima so spares are plentiful!

Mildred is correct,

I have been on this forum for most likely 6+ years and this topic has been thrashed out over and over again. During all that time no one has managed to fit the Saab turbo to a TR7.

Now that I have said it has not been done i guess one of you will, just to prove a point.[:)]

Well it won't be me!! Lol!! Excluding the fact i don't as yet have my Wedge, if i was to change the engine for something less run of the mill than the Rover V8 or Dolomite Sprint unit, then it would be one of the following :

"O" Series on twin carbs - fairly pointless as 5bhp less than TR7 lump but more available . . . . . maybe!

"O" Series Turbo Diesel - bit slower but great economy, spares still provided by Perkins

"O" Series turbo, as fitted to MG Montego/Maestro, 150bhp

"M" Series or possibly "T" Series - about 140bhp in multi-point injection form, will easily mate to LT77 box using "O" series bellhousing

"T" Series turbo in Rover Vitesse Sport spec - 200bhp as standard . . . . .

Volvo B230E - another slant 4 but listing the other way! About 135bhp

Got a few more ideas but need to research them first! No Saab engines though . . . . .
