hand brake cable too close to exhaust?

Postby southshoreTR7 » 04 Apr 2011 22:37

I just fitted a new hand brake cable on my 1980 tr7 DHC this afternoon as the old one has melted due to being too close to the exhaust. The new one is very close also. i was wondering what the proper way for it to be routed was as perhaps mine is routed wrong.

It is also possible that the exhaust is the problem.

Besides header heat wrap on that portion of the exhaust what are my options?

Use a cable tie to fixate the cable to the tie rod.
And make sure it is fitted properly ...

As you can see the cable comes pretty close to exhaust in Beans picture. The bend from the over axle pipe can bring it closer if it (the bend) isn't tight enough. I've just had a new over axle pipe and muffler welded on so when I have it up in the air later this week I'll have to double check it for cable position. Never occurred to me before to check that.

Pictures will follow....stay tuned....

Got my Spider up in the air to retorque the rear suspension and paint the new exhaust. The Ebrake cable doesn't come close to exhaust pipe, mind you the rear suspension is hanging down for whatever difference that makes.

Little harder to see when everythings black but that's what you get with a Black Widow Spider Spider.[:p]

Theo, your undercarriage pics are the best for showing how things should be done. The green body color really makes everything else stand out. Your blogs are probably the best how to reference's around. Great work!
And when a question comes up you always have just the right pic to post. Cheers!

On my new handbrake cable kit there was a temperature reflecting outer sleeve on say half a metre or so
- guess it's a remedy for the above situations?
