5 Speed gearbox mount

Postby DaveB » 31 Mar 2011 19:40

I need to change the soft gearbox rubber mount on my V8 Grinnall. Is it just a case of undoing the four cross member nuts - are they fixed studs on through the floor or are they bolts that I will have to hold inside? - plus the big centre bolt and jiggling the assembly around the exhausts to replave the rubber then reverse. Do I have to take the crossmember off at all ?
Any advice much appreciated

Hi David,

If the V8 cross member is the same as the 2.0 then you need to undo the 4 nuts which are on fixed studs so its fairly straight forward and then the crossmember can be removed.

You will want to remove this as it will be covered in road grime and all sorts of gunk, so will probably need a good clean before the new mount goes in.

If my memory serves me correctly the large center nut is just as easy to remove and do up again.

When i changed mine i put a trolley jack under the gearbox just to support it a little while the cross member was removed.

Hope this helps.[:)]

Let's not forget the one, (or two), exhaust pipe(s) that may be, (are), in the way. If there is no clearance, the pipe(s) will need to be dealt with.

This is the fly in the ointment that makes the job a pain.

When you drop the crossmember support the gearbox first, and don't lose the thick round spacer when you take out the centre bolt connecting the mounting to the gearbox. When replacing put the centre bolt back before tightening the crossmember (there is some movement on the studs) as it can be difficult to align the bolt through the mount and spacer with the thread in the gearbox which is soft ali and easily crossthreaded.
