Fuel sender ring won't budge. Now what?

Postby trekcarbonboy » 27 Feb 2011 22:10

I finally got around to replacing the fuel sending unit and the ring won't budge. It only took a few taps to shear off 2 of the tabs. Still have one left. I sprayed the ring with penetrating fluid and will try again next weekend. A little heat would work wonders here but I think a bit more then the ring would come off! [xx(] I don't think I can pry and bend the ring without damaging the rim on the tank. Any suggestions?

Don't know how you did yours but I tapped mine with a large flat end punch and hammer aimed at where the tab curves to the ring. I tapped mine (I've got two with FI fuel tank) on and off dozens of times as I flushed the stripper and roofing nails out many times over the course of six weeks to get the old flaking sealer out.

I gave up! Couldn't get the lock ring to budge. Going to let the shop do it. [:(]

Are you sure you are hitting the right tabs?

Yah...it shouldn't be that hard to undo. There's not a lot of surface area touching so even if it's rusted it shouldn't freeze.

Yup! I know it's a pretty straight foward procedure, it just won't budge. Even sprayed it daily for the past week with WD40. I'll let my cousin/mechanic/best-man deal with it. It has been in there for 35 years. Unfortunately the Triumph undercarriage lubrication system didn't reach this area.
