Leaking 5 speed

Postby Billy2 » 23 Feb 2011 15:02

Hello All
I have yet to be under a 7 with a 5 speed in which the rubber transmission mount wasn't a perishing, sodden mess.
I have replaced the mount, the rear seal and the o ring at the speedometer/odometer housing.
Everything appears to be dry but there is constant minor leak and the new mount is going the way of all the mounts I've seen before.
Any suggestions will be welcome.
Dave

Mine was just a gummy bear as well. I replaced the O rings in the oil pump and it dried everything up. It was all blow back. In the years since (4) there is a small leak under the car that has developed, from it's position I'm guessing from front seal on transmission or rear seal on engine.

I also found that replacing the o-ring seal in the oil pump stopped most of my leakage. The old ring came out in brittle pieces. The rubber tranmission mounts are a weak spot. It would be nice if someone would make a urethane one.

I'm replacing my gearbox mounting this saturday, not really examined the gearbox from underneath but know it is wet. Using a friends pit to do the job.

Is it easy to replace the oil pump seals, I presume there is some gearbox dismantling involved.

No. The oil pump (engine not transmission) is by the oil filter. My O rings came out as brittle bits (no wonder it leaked). I had the FI air plenum off so it was easy to get at from the top. Not sure what you have to do for carbs as I have all the intake off on Yellow TCT in prep for engine removal so it's all right there was well. There is also a small o ring in the pressure relief valve.

Thanks for the suggestions.
However, I have monitored what is leaking (leaving a metal pan under the rear of the transmission after each drive to catch the leak) to keep track of how much is leaking.
What is leaking was ATF before I recently changed to Penzzoil MTF and appears to be MTF now. Aside from that the area around the oil pump is bone dry.

Here's a guess. Is the gearbox rear oil seal leaking? If so, it can be replaced in situ.

However, to really seal off the leak, remove the gearbox rear extention. Replace the rear ball bearing with a shielded on the backside ball bearing with a new seal. This will cap off leakage forever, or at least a very long time.

Hi,

Worth checking the gearbox breather whilst under there, lives on top of the box and hopefully a plastic cover over it.

My money would be with my learned friend Mildred and rear seal.

Cheers John

One more area that leaks is the selector shaft at the rear of the 5 speed. It is directly over the mount. There is a small "O"ring, UKC7, in the case that can be accessed by removing the rear section of the gearbox.

Ah - I thought gearbox oil pump. I will examine things while the car is over the pit to see where the oil comes from. The good news is that the gearbox mounting is most probably original.

Replaced the gearbox mount today - it was certainly gummy bear.

Took her for a brief test drive and the vibration I had at 68mph seems much reduced although still there.

The front of the gearbox was wet the oil seems to be from the engine and the lower half of the oil pump is wet, should I now replace the oil pump seals, anything else to look at while I'm down there?

My friends pit was brilliant, steps down, duck boards and a pump to remove water, recessed lighting. Just the ease of access to everything underneath was excellent and made the job very easy - will use it again.

Main source for oil leaks on the TR7 engine are the two cranck shaft seals.

I do so hope our friend Pete doesn't get too spoiled by the use of proper garage equipment.

After all, where's the fun if one doesn't get a sore back, skinned knuckles, and a head ache from banging ones skull into the gearbox drain plug.
