In Texas you can't get your driver's license renewed, car inspected or get new registration without proof of insurance. The police now have insurance information on their data base. If you are driving down the road, they can look up the license plate number and see if you are insured.

Concidering the relatively low cost of insuring our cars, why would anyone leave their car on the drive uninsured anyway? I can understand not taxing it if it's not being used, because our road tax is a rip off, but no insurance is a big risk.

I`ve seen this elsewhere. Is it really that big a deal?

If you don`t intend to insure your car because it is off the road, you may as well send your tax disc back anyway and declare SORN, at least you get a refund. If you are due to get it back on the road within a few weeks and it is not worth sending your disc back, then you might as well insure it.

Someone on the MG forum said it would make the government money because they only refund full months left on your tax disc. I think it more likely they will lose revenue as it encourages people with cars off the road to apply for a refund.

As Replic8 said, my insurance is less than £70 per annum fully comp, it makes no sense not to insure it all year round.

PA and most of the states have had a policy similar for years. If the insurance lapses or is cancelled you are suposed to send the registration in to the state. However the Gov is so lax at this that it takes many months for them to catch up. So you still have people driving about without insurance. As usual, the honest person is inconvienienced while the scofflaws find a way around the law.

Here in BC, you pay your tax when you get your registration updated/plates as it is all government controlled. So only you have those driving around with expired plates (coloured sticker and number on the plate tells of expiry date). That being said I drove my Intera for almost a year without the stickers on (forgot to put them on) before one of my customers pointed it out to me.[:I] So it is possible for someone to be driving without insurance and it's up to the cops to check the expired plates by sight or road stop checks).

As the we no longer work regularly we only insure one car at a time, the 4X4 Tercel in winter (it might snow you know [:p]) and the Integra with A/C in summer as we can insure by the month or group of months. The collector cars are covered by one plate/low insurance premium all year around.

Why should you be told to insure anything?, Life insurance isn't compulsory, home insurance isn't either, so why if you own a car and don't use it on the road it needs to be insured (what harm can it do?)

The idea of motor insurance is to protect the the other party if you are to blame in the event of an accident.

We all know what the authorities are trying to do, stop uninsured cars being used. Unfortunately scum bags will still drive without it, they will never bother to send off the V5 or give a false address on purchase.

Here in Massachusetts we have excise taxes on our vehicles. Basically any vehicle titled gets charged a percentage of the total value of the car. I just leave mine untitled (so they can kiss it)

so what to do when selling a car after you bought another first,(dont trade in cos you get more private)leave it in the garden (taxed/tested) to sell it.would you buy a car without tax/test, i would'nt unless it was a project/classic. So the DVLA can come and clamp it /fine you while its in the garden not being used if your selling it, humph! sounds like we have a dictatorship 'a'comin'[:(]

This could be interesting, Ruby is untaxed, uninsured, no mot and I am still waiting for the log book to come to me with my name on it, she has been unlicenced for 23 years. Maybe that is the reason the log book hasn't come yet[:0] Rest assured as soon as the log book arrived she will be sorned[:D] Hopefully[?]

If it was untaxed when the SORN regulations came in, there's no need to SORN it when you get your V5C. Mine hasn't been taxed since 1997, I bought it in 2005, and I've heard nothing from the boys in Swansea. If you SORN it now, you'll have to keep SORNing it.
