I just tried a set of "stock" rear shocks from VB (stamped Made in Thailand with VB's part number on them) that I've had sitting around for a while and they feel like they're bottoming out so I put the old KYBs back on. I looked through the archives here and noticed that Beans noted that both Spax and Avo's are too long and bottom out in the shock as well.

If Rimmers is selling County rear shocks, those are the same dimensions as the ones I have here from VB.

Anyone have an ORIGINAL rear shock (was it Armstrong?) and can give us the closed and open dimensions (don't include the threaded parts at the ends)? I should take off those ancient Monroe shocks (1194 I think) on my other wedge and measure those dimensions and compare I suppose.

After reading somewhere on this Forum, I fitted some Monroe 31125 Rear Shocks. They were originally specified for Ford Customline, Ramblers and 60's Corvettes, and give a really good firm ride with no bottoming out.

Ah, that may have been me via Clay. My friend Phil (TR8 FHC) has these same rear Monroes on his (with KYBs on the front) and he <b>really</b> likes them as well. They do bottom occasionally on his car though but only once in a while. Still hoping to find a set of Konis lying around gathering dust in someone's warehouse I can snag.

Measurements on the Koni's are;
• Closed 301 mm;
• Open 484 mm.
As stated in my weblog they function fine, without bottoming out.
That's for the axle's bump stops

My Koni's are still going strong. Too bad they don't list them any more. Are there a set they make that can be substituted?

Valving wouldn't be as important as open and closed position and end type.

Here in Australia we can usually get Konis rebuilt without problem.

I found that with 2" lowered rear springs I had to have the extended length shortened to ensure the springs could not come out at full extension. (Of course, one could also fit a spring retainer plate as an alternative.)
