Seems I got carried away with the loud pedal and have to start putting resources and effort into a replacement.
Not happy Jan!

That's not very good news from half way round the world.
The good news is you can now build it better and stronger so the loud pedal can aways be used in excess[:D]

Won't have pics for a while as I will re-build a spare engine first, pull the broken one out and install the replacement before stripping it down to inspect what failed.
Based on the clacking noise and lack of any torque I suspect it's a broken piston (or two).

Bad luck indeed, but I strongly advice that before you build the new engine you check what caused the engines failure.
Otherwise it might happen again, it might be caused by incorrect timing or fuelling.

I suspect both have contributed and will be addressed in the rebuild.
I'm very keen to update the ignition in this rebuild and was considering going with EDIS4 and Megajolt Lite Jr. (MJLJ), or MicroSquirt (with only ignition hooked up) for the rebuild. But Marko's data in the FI and Ignition thread is causing me to think again. EDIS was not used by Ford here so I would need to import.
Going EFI at this stage is not in scope due to budget, but is an upgrade I might return to later.
Would welcome opinions on options.

it was a devastating moment
a bit like playing catch using a cricket or baseball with a friend
you keep throwing harder
then suddenly there's a miss
and the big pane of glass behind shatters into tiny fragments
one feels stupid for playing to excess
and the brain senses pain was it feels the wallet deflate

addendum - I need an ignition system with an over-rev cutout

EDIS 4 is fitted to Mondeo's in Australian wreckers, or can be bought for approx $100 for a complete setup from Boost Engineering. MegaSquirt using Spark only seems to be used quite a bit as the first step of an EFI installation. EDIS with MegaSquirt is good, as the spark is really stand-alone. (ie. if the MegaSquirt stops, the EDIS simply fires at 10 degrees BTDC to limp home).

May be a stupid statement this but check it's not a blowing exhaust manifold before doing anything else. When they go the car can sound like a bag of bolts and be significantly down on power.

Sorry to hear the news. I lost a 16V when the water pump drive shattered. £1000 for the rebuild.<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Century Gothic, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">[addendum - I need an ignition system with an over-rev cutout

I don't think it went over 7k but I'm not really sure as my eyes were focussed on the road as I was going around this tight 60 degree right hand bend on the crest of a hill.
I was at full tilt, driving harder than I should have been, but it was a familiar bit of road. It either popped out of 2nd or I missed the gear when I changed down (I think the former). I dropped the clutch and floored it, expecting to power slide.
The cacophany following was horrid - sounds of mechanical death throes.
Not to be repeated!
