Anyone fitted a 3rd Brake Light..........

to their DHC without fitting a rear spoiler or drilling the bootlid?

I was pulled over by the police the other night whilst driving my '96 Golf Gti. Only one of the two brake lights was working and their immediate thoughts were "duff light, older car, therefore dodgy car and driver". That's what they said, so I got the full ANPR workout and they got a surprise that I wasn't under 20.

They were very polite and after everything checked out fine, they recommended a 3rd brake light for the extra visibility and safety if one bulb blows again.

It's relatively easy to fit a high level 3rd brake light on a hatchback without molesting the car but what about the DHC?

It must be a very flat light if you will not crack the light when you open the boot.

Wish I could take credit for it, but the PO installed it. It looks very nice and is tucked away so you hardly notice it.

I use my car regularly in the UK so fitted a third brake light on the edge of the boot lit. Its about 15/20 m high by 250mm long & 35mm deep with a black body - it looks OK even without the spoiler I have fitted above it - and makes me a whole lot happier when I am driving in poor weather conditions. It can be seen just under the spoiler in Bean's blog about the RBRR:-

Is there a minimum height for the third brake light[?]

I thought about attaching one to my roll over bar and feeding the wires down inside the vinyl cover that its wrapped in.

Really like the picture of the little unit above though in between the two numberplate lights, you could make that out of one of those flexible strips of red LEDS.

Hi,

As far MOT concerned then no hight is specified, but must be roughly central.

This was where Vars hi stop was positioned on the roll bar when it was fitted with a bar[8D]

Image

Plus it could be seen with the roof raised, if you haven't a roll bar then this want be of any use[V]

Hi

When I was at college a friend of mine had an MG Midget where he had embedded extra brake lights in the rear of the head restraints. This had been done really well and didn't look as bad as it might sound.

Perhaps there's room for considering a modern equivalent with LEDs?

Just a thought.

Cheers
