Replacement Carpets in US/Canada

Postby Vegas_M » 27 Oct 2010 01:46

There is a guy on ebay that has TR7/8 carpets for sale for around $150 to $170.
I was wondering if anyone had bought from him and what they thought of the carpets.

Pretty sure that is the one I purchased as it was cheap..... trying to install it now and it is so thin that the carpet under your feet will not stay in place but scrunches up. The area up behind the pedals falls down to the floor becuse theere is no strength in such a thin carpet.

The Transmission tunnel and cills are fine because you just glue them in. The edging sewn in is strong and holds it together

Another problem though is that the thin backing is not well glued and is starting to separate from the floor piece of the carpet after just days of use.

I am thinking of glueing closed cell foam to the back to stiffen it up. It is already lined but only with some very thin, open cell foam that you might use to seal a TR7 heater

You get what you pay for!

I would buy better next time.

I purchased a set from Ron for my Yellow TCT for cheap (he got it from same place on eBay). Although not installed it is OK but thinner and I also was thinking it would need an additional backing of some sort to give it more body. Will be looking for some cheap type of jute or rubber/foam backing to spray/glue on. As said you get what you pay for and while I think it will ultimately work well it will need some additional work to make it up to snuff.

I bought a set in Red from them. Yes, they are thinner, but I like them. I think I paid like $125.-$130.00 US. They (mine) were cut properly and fit right in. Works for me, I refurbished my car to be driven. So I did not want to spend alot of $ on carpeting, cause mine only gets beat up with passengers dirty shoes, leaves, rain, and UV-sunlight. [8D]

Has anyone purchased the carpet set from Victoria British that is made in England. Victoria British sells 3 different sets of carpet with the made in England being the most expensive and hopefully the best quality.
I have just purchased a 1980 DHC and am planning on a winter makeover.
I contacted a bunch of buyers of the ebay carpet and their responses
were mixed, mostly not pleased with the quality. I am in Ontario Canada
and any TR7 part suppliers around me want a close to $500 for a carpet set.

I purchased from him. Was a bit long on shipping but not to bad. Carpet was a bit thin as stated but it all went in the coupe fine with no issues. I tack glued in along the trans tunnel and sills used some heat to help the sections under the seat. The color is nice (red) and the right shade as far as any press photos I have seen. I am satisfied with the result and the price was right, I paid $138 2and a half years ago.

Pictures can be seen in my photo album, not the best shot but you see the color.

Thanks for the reply Mark. When you said you purchased from him, did you mean the guy on ebay or Victoria British ? The carpet set on Victoria British for $300 is imported from the UK and is supposedly a formed set and felt backed. I would rather go with a better quality set then purchase something I would not be happy with.
Where are you located and do you buy from anyone in particular in Canada. I will also need to do something about the seats but haven't decided whether to redo the originals or install some leather ones out of something else. I would appreciate any pointers you can give me.
Thanks again.

Oops sorry Tim. I bought from flea bay. Definatly not the highest of quality carpets but I am none the less satisfied. Many people have commented that the interior of the '78 coupe is quite good and I think the red carpet realy sets it off. To tell you the truth I have not bought much stuff here in Canada. Have ordered from Vic Brit and Moss in the US as well as e bay US quite a few times. Have also ordered from Rimmer a couple of times but only if I have to, shipping is high.

I've not seen available new formed or moulded carpet sets for the TR7 for many years now. Every set on sale now appears to be flat and to have edging sewn on, usually tacky (in my opinion) plastic edging. The sewn on edging removes any chance of obtaining a factory finish appearance. I would be interested to know if the original spec moulded carpets are now available.
