The red ones go at the rear & are wired to the rear side lights, the amber ones go at the front and are normally connected to the indicators.

The fronts would normally also be connected to the side lights - so they shine at night when 'cruising'. They are not intended to be indicator repeaters - but can of course be used as such. They can also be connected to BOTH side and indicator circuits. At night - they will shine as intended with only a slight loss of brightness, and when the indicator is used at night - they will flash OFF as the indicator flashes ON - in other words opposite sense. In daytime - they will flash as normal - again slight loss of brilliance.

A must for town driving, especially when pulling out at junctions at night. The recessed front side lights and indicators can be hidden otherwise.

<font color="teal"><b>I agree with Roy

That they should be wired in to the side lights

I think it looks strange with only a red light at the back

As for wiring it in to the side lights and the indicators is that legal

To have them flashing at the opposite time to the main indicators. ?

My rear ones are connected to my side lights and the front ones are connected to the indicators. I was thinking of changing the front ones so they are wired up to the side lights, but after thinking about it, I also think it is a must to have the indicators on the side of the car, so have decided not to change them around.

OK, let's get these facts straight now:
The US side lights were wired together with the front and rear position indicators.

The oem side direction flashers (compulsory fitment in Italy and optional in other markets) looked like this,
and were wired together with the front direction flashers...

Why would they have extra (round) side lights when they already had (access to) the side lights of the N/A cars that could be wired into flashers or just in on position as required by countries laws?

Don't know - but that's the way they did it.

Not the first time British engineers made something bizarre
in the eyes of the rest of us. Probably not the last time either...

The 1981 front loom I have installed includes a spare connection that I imagine is for these lights. Do you know if tis is running lights (side lights) or indicators?

Where is the connectors?
Up front - I'd guess side indicators...
Rear end of the bay - wing flashers.
