Why does my side window drop?

Postby TR Tony » 08 Jul 2010 22:21

The passenger window on my car drops about 5mm every time I use the car. It winds up & down fine, but go a few miles & it opens itself for this little bit of extra ventilation.

As I have never delved into the window mechanisms hidden behind the door panel, can anyone tell me what to look for or how to fix this?

Many thanks[:)]

My guess is the counter balance spring has gotten weak over the years. You could take out the winder mechanism and wind it up a little tighter. With it out you should be able to figure out how to do it as my instructons may not make much sense. I don't know if there is enough spring that you can do that with out choking off when the window is down near the bottom of it's travel but worth a try as the other option would be a new machanism.

your window mechanism (regulator) is likely worn out. they're $60 in the states from VicBrit, so are likely cheaper closer to home-base. I had mine out last year; reassembly wasn't a big deal. just pay attention if disassembling, it can be a project if you don't!

yeah, but you don't have to pay for the boat ride over there! of course, too many new parts for these cars are re-pop imports from india &/or china, yet can still command premium prices...

Wow, They must send the parts to the US by very cheep tramp steamer,
& ours to Oz by luxury liner.

Three years ago I payed A$145 each for window regulators. Just
Thursday I payed A$82 for two number plate lights, with their
gaskets.

I hope the luxury sea voyage gets our parts in the mood to give a
long trouble free life.

Alan, that sea voyage can be good for some cars.

In the early 60s I took delivery of a new Morgan+4. We had heard
that new Morgans required months, or even years of the owner
tightening every bolt on the car, from time to time. This was
attributed to the rather firm suspension shaking everything loose.

We did not find this necessary in Oz. Everyone reckoned it was
because of the sea voyage. We believed the nuts & bolts developed
enough rust while at sea, to not come undone, when driving, or at
any other time.

So don't knock that rust, our cars just may be held together with it.

Too right Hasbeen, mine certainly is! UK climate is just as good for them as sea voyage.
