Steering Shaft Coupling/U-Joint

Hi all,

My upper steering u-joint is totally seized and the lower one is loose needs to be rebuilt (if that's even possible). It's probably better and cheaper to replace both with proper u-joint's than to try to recondition the ones I have.

So, anyone know what size the splines are? Looks like about 1/2" or 9/16" dia with around 30 splines. Is this correct? Any suggestions for u-joint replacements?

Thanks.
M.

I would go with Rimmer Brothers in the UK.
My orders from them generally take less than 5 working days.
They ship UPS "Saver" rate to Canada which avoids the dreaded customs clearance charge.

The top U/J comes with the shaft, the bottom one on its own. Both are around 30.00 GBP + vat over here but sterling is weak so probably a good deal for you.

They don't look like they can be rebuilt and I've replaced both in my time. It's a difficult job on a V8 with tubular manifolds / headers as there's very little clearance. The starter is close as well so best to disconnect the battery if you don't want to weld a dropped spanner to one of the terminals.

If you mark the splines / joints at the steering straight ahead position before you start you shouldn't have the steering wheel at a strange angle when you finish, like I did the first time.

Hey Rich,

I'm surprised at your shipping experience. I've been dinged by customs and customs broker clearance charges on absolutely everything I've had shipped by Rimmers, not to mention what I consider to be their quite high shipping rates.

However, rather than replacing the intermediate shaft and u-joint with stock non-rebuildable ones, I'd prefer to replace them with rebuildable joints and a dbl splined shaft, or at least something with grease nipples.

Guess I'll keep looking.
