Electrical accessories

Postby prlee » 31 May 2010 17:32

I will be fitting an electric arial to replace the broken manual one, from the handbook I suspect they were a factory option, anyone know where the supply would have come from.

I was thinking of a new supply through a relay switched from the radio, but if there is an existing supply I would use that.

I am also fitting electric windows, I will run a new power supply from the battery but would like to run it through a relay controlled from the accessory position on the starter switch, where would be a good place to get this trigger supply from?

With regard to the electric aerial, my '81 has one which looks reasonably original although the wires have been jointed at some time so may not be. Anyway, the feed comes along the nearside a a red and a purple cable bound in black plastic which looks like part of the original loom.

(Funnily enough, while I was looking at those wires I found a connector hanging loose which I had never seen before. Plugged it into the boot light switch 'cos it looked like it fitted and, hey presto, the boot light works! Have disconnected tho as I don't trust it to go out!).

The power antenna is controled by a WP wire between the radio position and the antenna position
and then power is fed through the same P wire as feeds the boot lamp/boot lamp switch. Well, at
least in the TR8. Presumably the TR7 is similar?

I think they do but there is provision in the loom for the feed from the radio position to the aerial at the rear. I seem to remember that I used a relay from the radio output as there was some limit on the load the radio could handle and I did not know the current draw of the aerial.

The aerial feed on mine is different to the boot lamp, it is a separate bound pair of cables whereas the 'boot lamp' cable I found is from the broad loom. But, looking at the wiring diagram Odd is right about the PW feed for the boot lamp, so what is the PR feed I found which seemed to fit and work the boot lamp? I cannot see a PW connection at all (but there is also a hefty WB with a single socket connector on the end not doing anything)!

I now remember that I have a connector dangling down in the boot. I haven't looked closely at it as I assumed the loom was standard between DHC and FHC and was for the heated rear window.

As I write this I think I have the answer, if this is for the heated rear window I can use this for a variety of things, if it is for an electric arial I can use it for that. Back to the wiring diagram.

Hi Nervious owner, there is a thin wire from the radio. I didn't think this was substantial enough to power the arial directly only trigger a relay. Is this not correct, I don't have the arial yet to check.

That was my understanding too that the wire from the radio just flicked the aerial on and off and it took its pawer from another feed.

Part of the standard DIN pinout on modern car radios contains a control signal, which is used to trigger an electric aerial or switch on a power amp located in the boot (e.g. to power a subwoofer). The devices themselves must however have a power source from elsewhere. The boot light power is probably sufficient for an electric aerial. On mine, the boot light a purple wire and the control signal is a thin blue one.
