5 speed tranny lube

Postby rdppilot » 10 May 2010 11:41

Hi, I am new to the triumph scene. Bought my first on off my uncle who has had it since it was new. Anyways, its a 1978 tr7 hardtop. absolutley mint condition, will have to get pics up here soon. But my question about the tranny is, has anyone tried using like the penzoil syncromesh gear oil, and if so how did it do. Any info on this subject will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes, that's the stuff.

Please use the SEARCH function at the top right of your screen to view the many posts on gear oil and gearboxes. We have done it to death around here.

<font color="purple"><font face="Comic Sans MS">Hi, Ryan!
First and foremost, a big welcome to the joys of being a Wedgie owner and as a new member of this forum! [:D] We are glad to have you here! These 'rumphers know their stuff and are always quick to lend a hand--even on topics I am sure they have seen many times over! They are cool like that. [8D]

From what I've read here, Penzoil Syncromesh sounds like a really good thing. My Spidey will be getting that soon and I can't wait to see if there is a noticeable difference. Let us know how it goes for you! --Monica
And yes, we looooove the pics! [^]</font id="Comic Sans MS"></font id="purple">

That is the stuff to use. I have found it at NAPA stores and Autozone stores.

Ryan, welcome to the site. Mildred gets a little cranky when we don't use use the search function and then ask a question that has been discussed before. Don't worry. I do it all the time. One thing with search on this forum is that often it will search but time out. If that happens, just click the back arrow and then return to the search page and usually it comes up.
The other thing is that these gearboxes are likely to grind while shifting to second when cold. A synthetic lube does help some but does not eliminate the problem

Welcome!

As a matter of fact we are even quite eager to give advice on topics we have no clue about.....So be sure to get confirmation!

I am running ATF in my 5-speed for now but intend to switch to Pennzoil as soon as I get motivated.

Cheers,
Rich (Also a FHC owner)

Anyone tried this stuff? I've found it locally, to my surprise!. It´s the nearest thing to a monograde, that i tend to prefer over multigrades, i've heard their viscosity "de-grades" over time.
It seems to be the right type and size too. I´ll be pouring it in unless someone advises to the contrary. I hope Mildred approves!

If you have a 4-speed gearbox, it'll work just fine.

If you have a 5-speed gearbox, GAUNCH! GRIND!!! GAUNCH & GRIND!!!!!

George,
as Ms Hargis said: only for 4-speed gearboxes <u>not</u> for the 5-speeds! Don't even try it, you'll regret it.

In the 5-speed you want something definitely different to the hypo gear oils - and here we usually
recommend the Pennzoil Manual Transmission Fluid, Part No 3501, for the 5-speeds...

I will be switching over to the GM Syncromesh in mine by the end of next week ((now being able to use my employee discounts for the stuff))

For all normal use a good quality ATF to the original spec should be OK.
As I like to do long distance events, I switched To Castrol SMX-S. This is a synthetic gear oil with a viscosity of SAE 75W-85.
Actually this is the same viscosity the TR7 Sprint Manual,
I have lying around, states for refilling the 5 speed 'box "when completely drained".

Ouch! I don´t want either gaunch! grind! or whiney! whine!
I need, what i call, the "intermediate" type of oil: MTF. I DO mind paying for overpriced oil & postage overseas, so my question is: would it be a safe bet to buy locally a synthetic 75W/90 gear oil?
I live in one of the sunniest parts of Spain (as hot as hell in summer) so i would expect any shifting problems to be much lessened.
The oil is only available in 5 Litres so i have to be sure enough.
The chap at the store was very helpful in refunding, he even looked up on the computer his lubricant file for the TR7; it was blank; too old a car i guess!

Why not just use a decent ATF (auto trans fluid) as Beans said. This is available anywhere in the world. The original is to a Ford spec (try a search and it should come up somewhere) but any decent one should do.

I live in one of the sunniest parts of Oz yorkins, probably hotter
than Spain.

When I put gear oil in the box of my first 7, I did not get any
crunch or grind, the thing just would not go into second at all
when cold. I have run ATF in them ever since.

I have used it in my daily driver 7 for over 60,000Km, & 8 years. I
use the same stuff in the 7 as I use in the 280 BHP, 4.6L TR8,
which has had a ZF auto fitted to it. If it lubricates that OK, I
can't see a problem with using it in the box behind the little 2.0L
slant 4.

Ever!

If you simply cannot find any MTF in Spain (I find this strange - I can get both the Pennzoil
and the GM stuff <u>locally</u> here in Sweden, in a village with a population of just 2500!)
you will have to resort to use the ATF option... But MTF is better - if you can get it!
