Boot / Trunk Gas Struts XKC 3893

I'm in the same boat with many of the forum...I bought new struts from Victoria British a couple years ago and now they don't work. I do have a luggage rack.....I don't care though.......it is what it is......at least my tr7 runs now, which wasn't the case this summer.....

it would be interesting to find a gas strut that worked on the mechanical mounting points.

On MGB's, many people try to help by closing the trunk, only to bend the trunk lid by not pushing the stop that holds it up. There's a retrofit to convert that to a pair of struts. The trunk lid stand proud, and easily closes. There's a hood set, and a hatch set for GT's, as well.

I might have to compare the MGB and TR7 supports... maybe they're interchangable.

Would someone take a couple measurements for me? I have the lame, dead struts.

Based on Beans's photo (I hope it's OK to use this as an example, if not, let me know), please measure...

<ul><li>the distance, center-to-center, of the mounting screws.</li><li>the length of the lower, outer section</li></ul>

I think I have a bright idea... Is this the same part as the hood/bonnet support?

D@mn! That would have made it easy. I saw that all four Moss part numbers were different (MGB and TR7), but I wonder just how different the parts really are.

the MGB trunk support has the same size lower bar, but the total length is an inch shorter. Looks like I might have an alternative to the lift-and-lock hood support to a pair of modern gas struts.

You can adapt them...I'm using a Herald boot stay on my TR7 boot.

For some reason mine is missing. Any idea where in the USA I could find one with all the hardware? Ive tried ebay with no luck. there must be a scrapyard or something that would have one but dont know where to start. Maybe someone has a parts car that would sell one for a 1980 TR 7 DHC? Thanks for any help, Jim

Jim, are you talking about the twin struts, fitted to the hinges, that aid in lifting the boot/trunk lid, & hold it up, or are you talking about a prop similar to the one that props the bonnet/hood open?

The prop is not a standard item, but is fitted by many when the struts loose their oomph too often.

If you are getting them from the scrapyard and you can find more than one set - its worth doubling them up.

This helps them out a bit and they seem to last longer.

The link for the hydraulic struts, which do wear out fast....
on the same catologue page for Victoria British is the sliding trunk support......part #44.

I don't know how to attach this to my 1980 FI Tr, but I'm sure you could figure it out. To be honest with you, when my trunk is straight up and down in the open position there is no weight on the struts, so I don't worry about it crashing onto my head.....the hydraulic struts were a challenge for me to get in too....time consuming........not technically hard.....
