Just a short add on to this subject - on the five speed gearbox take care when removing the gear stick from its ball joint that you dont loose the little spring and plunger.

I have been running my car with a gearstick with 2 inches cut from the middle and then re welded together and bent slightly to make it a better angle, for about five years now - my arm rests on the centre console and the Knob is at the right height for nice lazy V8 driving!
