If the points gap is out the emissions tend to go haywire. So don't forget to check points dwell and the timing as both can have a major effect. Points have caused a doubling of hydrocarbons on my car in previous years.

I'm running a luminition kit at the moment, but yes, even this could be faulty. It is great when you get handed that valid MOT cert[:D]

Sorry for the bleated 'well done'. That's super news. Now for the bedding in and re-tuning.

I always do the order of:

valve clearances,
valve timing,
points(dwell)if fitted,
cap and leads,
plugs,
ignition timing, and
carbs.

It may take longer to do, but from experience, I've found you only need do it all once.
